Tennis Tips this Week

  • ATP Atlanta

John Isner returns to defending his title in what has been a happy hunting ground for the tall, big-serving American No. 1. Isner is far and away ahead of his fellow US team-mates and US No. 2 Sam Querrey is most at risk of being overtaken this week by either Steve Johnson or Jack Sock, just a few places behind him. Isner faces strong opposition from last year’s finalist Kevin Anderson, and Vasek Pospisil, fresh from his Wimbledon Men’s doubles triumph with Sock.

Once more onto the clay for a bunch of hardy players just ahead of the US hard court swing, led by Mikhail Youzhny who returns to defend his title, along with strong clay courters Marcel Granollers and Fernando Verdasco.
Also making his return to competition is Serbia’s Victor Troicki after serving out his doping suspension.

Will we see more fun and games from the volatile Italian Fabio Fognini who leads the field on clay, with Spain’s Tommy Robredo as the second seed. Marin Cilic and Joao Sousa round out the top four seeds, as the tennis watching public begins to tire of Fognini’s temper tantrums.

There is another chance for some hard court practice in Europe before the US hard court swing stars with Romania’s Sorana Cirstea topping the list in Baku, along with Elina Svitolina, Magdalena Rybarikova and Kurumi Nara.
Britain’s Heather Watson pick up a seeding – the British No. 1 is seeded seventh and will be in the US Open main draw after finally recovering from a season hit with Glandular fever.
