Without an ATP World Tour title of any description three months ago, Basilashvili now has two ATP 500 crowns, adding the China Open silverware in Beijing to the Hamburg trophy he secured just after Wimbledon. Basilashvili won 10 straight sets since his opening round win over Jack Sock on his way to the title, conquering U.S. Open runner-up and World No. 4 Juan Martin del Potro 6-4 6-4 in Sunday’s final.

Del Potro was suffering from illness, but Basilashvili’s sublime shotmaking was a delight to watch as the Georgian saved all seven break points he faced to land arguably the biggest win of his career and continue his breakout season.

"I was in a really good shape coming up to this tournament," said Basilashvili. "I'm really feeling well on court. Playing against Juan, he was sick today for sure, I could see that. But he put me in really tough situations. I needed to really work it, to work hard to win the points. I really enjoyed this match. To win a title here in Beijing means a lot, it's one of the best tournaments."

Basilashvili, who also became the first man from Georgia to reach the U.S. Open fourth round last month, rises 11 spots in the ATP rankings to No. 23 in the world. The 26-year-old was ranked outside the top 80 in July but is now on course to finish 2018 in the top 20.

Meanwhile, it was still a successful week for del Potro despite the disappointment of losing the final, with the Argentine securing qualification into the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time since 2013.

Elsewhere, Medvedev won his third title of 2018 and his second as a qualifier, storming to the Japan Open trophy in Tokyo without dropping a set, including a brilliant 6-2 6-4 triumph in Sunday’s final against homegrown star Kei Nishikori.

Incredibly, Medvedev won 32 of his last 33 service points as he completely dominated Nishikori from start to finish, while he didn’t drop serve at all in the quarter-finals, semis and final.

"I'm just really happy. I've been showing amazing tennis here. I'm happy that what I have been doing all season in practice, physical workouts, worked out here in Tokyo," Medvedev said. "This is my biggest title, so I'm just really happy."

Medvedev, who was ranked outside the top 80 at the start of the season, also won titles in Sydney and New Haven in the weeks before the Australian and U.S. Opens respectively. The 22-year-old is the first Russian to win the Tokyo crown and rises 10 places in the latest ATP rankings to a career-high No. 22.

Nishikori remains No. 12 in the world after the U.S. Open semi-finalist fell just short in his bid to capture three Tokyo titles and his first ATP crown in 31 months.

World No. 2 Roger Federer and World No. 3 Novak Djokovic return to action this week at the Shanghai Rolex Masters, but World No. 1 Rafael Nadal remains on the sidelines with injury.
