Australian Matthew Ebden leads the field this week on the carpet-courts of Toyota, Japan, with home players Tatsuma Ito and Yuichi Sugita also vying for the Dunlop World Challenge trophy. Tennis is live from the event from 23 – 29 November, 2015.
2013 champion Matthew Ebden is the top seed at the 'Dunlop World Challenge', and is not the only former victor in the field. Japan's own Go Soeda, the no. 4 seed, is defending champion at the tournament, and fellow 2014 finalist Tatsuma Ito is seeded second. There is much potential for the home nation to see multiple Japanese players make a deep run here, with no. 5 seed Yuichi Sugita and no. 7 seed Yoshihito Nishioka leading another 13 countrymen in the field.
The Dunlop World Challenge is one of few tournaments still contested on indoor carpet, and has been running since 2008. Since then, it has seen many of its own find success at the event. Go Soeda won the first edition of the event in 2008, as well as 2014, whilst Tatsuma Ito has reached the final four times – winning in 2010 and 2011. Yuichi Sugita has reached the final twice.
On offer this week for the champion is a monetary prize of $5,750 and 80 ATP ranking points. Considering that the highest ranked player at the event is the world no. 107, that is a significant amount for every contender. But who will take this opportunity to advance their career over the next few days?
