Lacko leads the field in Sowetto

Steven Webb in Challengers 21 Jun 2013
Lukas Lacko is the highest-ranked player competing in Sowetto.

One of the biggest Challenger events of the week takes place in Soweto, South Africa.

The $100,000 hard court event awards 110 ranking points to the champion, and offers lower-ranked players the opportunity to gain momentum and experience at a competitive level. The top seed in the draw is Lukas Lacko, currently ranked 78 in the world. The Slovak made a promising start to 2013, reaching the quarter-finals in Doha and Auckland, but he has since struggled to put together wins.

All the other players competing in Sowetto have rankings in triple figures, but many will be known to followers of men’s tennis, including Rajeev Ram, who won a main draw event in Newport in 2009, and Vasek Pospisil, a key contributor to Canada’s recent Davis Cup success.
