Leonardo Mayer vs Simone Bolelli Santiago Challenger tennis live: Key Santiago matches on Wednesday 8 March

  • Leonardo Mayer faces a fellow player with a former Top 50 ranking in Santiago
  • Casper Ruud has a chance to demonstrate his growing clay credentials against eighth seed
  • Santiago Challenger tennis is live from Santiago on Wednesday 8 March

Leonardo Mayer, Casper Ruud and top seed Rogerio Dutra Silva are in action at the Santiago Challenger on Wednesday 8 March.

It has been a tough last eighteen months for Leonardo Mayer. The Argentine was ranked as high as No.21 less than two years ago, but he has struggled for form and fitness since. He is one of the star names in the Santiago Challenger draw, though he is  unseeded. Despite being unseeded, Mayer has still been called upon for Argentina duty in the Davis Cup, playing doubles with Carlos Berlocq in the recent tie with Italy.

(1) Rogerio Dutra Silva vs Caio Zampieri: Top seed Dutra Silva should have few problems with his compatriot Zampieri, who struggled past qualifier Hugo Dellien in a close three-setter in the first round. Dutra Silva dropped five games against Jordi Samper-Montana, finishing strongly by inflicting a bagel on the Spaniard. Samper-Montana is a more accomplished player than Zampieri, and the Brazilian should struggle against the top seed. Pick: Rogerio Dutra Silva.

(Q) Guilherme Clezar vs (2) Nicolas Kicker: Potentially the match of the round. Clezar is a very strong player on clay, demonstrating his level with an excellent win over Tristan Lamasine. Kicker's form outside of his run to the Rio Open is by new means exceptional. The Argentine has not secured back-to-back wins at any other events, and Clezar is a horrible draw. Pick: Guilherme Clezar.

(4) Taro Daniel vs Christian Garin: Garin is one of just two Chilean players to have made it into the main draw on their own merit. Garin has a good record on clay, and Daniel surprisingly lost a set to Federico Coria. Despite that result, anything other than a win here for Daniel would be a shock.
Pick: Taro Daniel.

(5) Arthur De Greef vs Guido Andreozzi: Andreozzi would normally be backed to do well here, but the Agrentine has retired in both of his last two events, leading to a question about his fitness. He secured an easy first round win but De Greef will be much tougher. Pick: Arthur De Greef.

(8) Joao Souza vs Casper Ruud: Ruud is a player whose ranking will almost definitely finish in the Top 100 by season's end if he keeps performing like his year to date. The young Norwegian faces a seeded player whose career is well centred on strong performances at these types of events.
Pick: Casper Ruud.

Leonardo Mayer vs (PR) Simone Bolelli: These two were fixtures of the Top 100 for years, and both can count clay as their best surface. Bolelli has played only the one event on his return from injury, and was soundly thrashed by Dusan Lajovic, before earning a retirement win here. Mayer's few extra matches so far this season should give him the edge. Pick: Leonardo Mayer.

(WC) Nicolas Jarry vs Maximo Gonzalez: Gonzalez sprung the shock of the first round in taking down third seed Gerald Melzer in dominant fashion. It was the win of the season so far for the Argentine, and though Jarry also picked up a good win, the nature of the win for Gonzalez in the last round makes him a strong favourite for this one. Pick: Maximo Gonzalez.

Marco Cecchinato vs (Q) Christian Lindell: If Gonzalez's win was the shock of the round, then Lindell's win against Inigo Cervantes was a close second. The Swede induced a bagel on Cervantes to finish the match, but Cecchinato is in much better form than the sixth seed.
Pick: Marco Cecchinato.
