American teenager, Amanda Anisimova has withdrawn from the US Open following the death of her father and coach, Konstantin Anisimov.

Anisimova’s family is yet to comment on the news, but the player’s agent, Max Eisenbud confirmed the tragedy to ESPN.

Anisimova’s father, Konstantin, with his wife Olga, and daughter, Maria moved to the United States from Russia in 1998, three years before Amanda was born.

The young gun has since risen to become one of the brightest prospects in the women’s game, reaching No. 2 in the world junior rankings, and winning the US Open Girl’s title in 2017. She has had an impressive transition to from the junior to the senior ranks, breaking into the world’s top-100 in 2018, just a year after her US Open junior success.

Anisimova has accelerated into the top-30 in 2019, winning her maiden WTA title in Bogota, and composing a sensational run to the semi-finals of the French Open, where she famously eliminated then defending champion, Simona Halep before falling just short against eventual champion, Ashleigh Barty. The 17-year-old had also reached the fourth round of the Australian Open earlier in the year.

Anisimova has played just one tournament in the US hard court season, in San Jose, where she made the quarter finals, before pulling out of Premier-5 tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati due to a back problem.

The world No. 24 was expected to return to action at the US Open, where she would have been one of the 32 seeded players.
