Suneer Chowdhary in News 11 Jan 2017
John Isner will be in action on Thursday.

The quarterfinals of 2017 ATP Auckland will be played on Thursday, January 12 with John Isner and Jack Sock heading the draw for the day.

Second seeded American Isner will take on his compatriot Steve Johnson in the second fixture of the day at the centre court. Isner had a bye in the opening round here. He defeated Malek Jaziri 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(6) in three sets in the second round on Wednesday in order to enter the quarterfinals.

Johnson started off with a straight sets win over Stephane Robert of France in the opening round. The seventh seed went on to tame Yen-Hsun Lu 6-4, 7-6(4) in the second round to set up this upcoming clash.

Six previous meetings between these two Americans have seen Isner take a 4-2 lead in the overall head-to-heads. Their last meeting had come at the quarterfinals of the 2016 ATP Washington where Johnson had defeated Isner in straight sets.

Later in the evening, fourth seeded American Jack Sock will go up against Jeremy Chardy in the fourth quarterfinal at the centre court. Sock had a bye in the opening round as well. The fourth seed defeated Ryan Harrison 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-1 in three sets in the second round to move into the quarterfinals.

Chardy received a walk-over from Feliciano Lopez in the second round after he had defeated Artem Sitak in straight sets in the first round here in Auckland.

This upcoming contest will be the second career meeting between these two men. Sock won the only previous meeting between these two players back at the 2014 ATP Stockholm.

Eighth seeded Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis will play Jiri Vesely in the third fixture of the afternoon at the centre court. After beating Adrian Mannarino in straight sets in the first round, Baghdatis came back from one set behind to defeat Dustin Brown in the second round on Wednesday.

Vesely defeated Jose Statham in similar fashion to Baghdatis in the second round. The Czech lost the opening set before bouncing back 6-7(6), 7-5, 6-3 in three sets. He had downed Horacio Zeballos in straight sets in the opening round.

Baghdatis has a 100 percent win record against Vesely from three previous fixtures and will start as the favourite to enter the semi-finals.
