ATP Auckland 2017 tennis matches for Wednesday, January 11 - Agut, Isner head today's action

Suneer Chowdhary in News 10 Jan 2017
John Isner will be in action today.

The second round of matches at 2017 ATP Auckland will be played on Wednesday, January 11 with Roberto Bautista Agut and John Isner heading the draw for the day.

Top seeded Spaniard Bautista Agut will square off against Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic in the third fixture of the afternoon at the centre court.

The Spaniard is coming into this tournament on the backs of title success at the ATP Chennai last week where he beat Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the final. The outcome of the event was in stark contrast to the manner in which Bautista Agut ended his season last year. He had a bye in the opening round here.

Vesely defeated Horacio Zeballos 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets in the opening round here in order to set up this clash against the top seed. The Czech had also been in action last week at the ATP Doha, where he was beaten in the second round by Tomas Berdych in three sets.

Two previous contests between these two men have seen the Spaniard win both contests. Bautista Agut will start as the favourite to extend his winning run over Vesely on Wednesday.

American second seed Isner is to play Malek Jaziri of Tunisia in the second fixture of the afternoon at the centre court. Isner had a bye in the first round here. This ongoing tournament is the first of the season for the American. He had ended last season with an appearance at the grand finale of the Paris Masters, where he was beaten to the title by reigning world number one Andy Murray.

Jaziri did well to defeat Diego Schwartzman of Agrentina in straight sets in the opening round here. He won the first set on a tie-breaker before sealing a 7-6(1), 6-3 victory over the Argentine. Jaziri had also been in action at Doha last week where he was beaten by Philipp Kohlschreiber in the very first round.

This will be the third career meeting between these two men. Isner has a 100 percent win record against the Tunisian and will start as the favourite to win.
