Czech Republic star Karolina Pliskova has pulled out of the upcoming 2018 Fed Cup final in Prague against defending champions USA with a leg injury.

Former World No. 1 Pliskova put together a strong finish to the season after a difficult start, winning the Tokyo title and making the semi-finals of the WTA Finals Singapore, but the Czech took to social media to reveal she’s been dealing with a calf injury and wouldn’t be able to take her place in the side to face USA in Prague this weekend.

"I was looking forward to the final very much, but after the examination my start is not possible," Pliskova said. “I’m really sorry about that. Our team is strong enough!”

Pliskova was originally named in the Czech squad alongside fellow top 10 player Petra Kvitova, rising star Katerina Siniakova and established veteran Barbora Strycova.

Pliskova’s spot in the team will be filled by doubles World No. 1 Barbora Krejcikova, who teamed up with fellow No. 1 and Fed Cup teammate Siniakova to win the French Open and Wimbledon titles this year.

The Czech team are gunning for their sixth Fed Cup title in the last eight years, with their last five victories coming under the tutelage of current captain Petr Pala. The Czechs will also have revenge on their minds after the USA beat them 3-2 in last year’s semi-finals before going on to beat Belarus for a record 18th Fed Cup title and a first trophy since 2000.

Even despite Pliskova’s withdrawal, USA are the big underdogs to defend their title, with the Williams sisters, Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys all making themselves unavailable for the final.

U.S. captain Kathy Rinaldi has named World No. 35 Danielle Collins to lead the team’s charge alongside teenager Sofia Kenin, the experienced Alison Riske and doubles specialist Nicole Melichar. Collins, Kenin and Melichar will all be making their Fed Cup debuts in the final.

The 2018 Fed Cup final is live from Prague between November 10-11.
