Djokovic, Federer set to play at this year's Nitto ATP finals after US Open runs

The tournament's most successful players, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have punched their tickets to the eight-man showdown held at London's O2 arena from 11-18 November. Both men have combined to win 11 of the last 15 titles, establishing their utter dominance of the prestigious season-ending event.

Serbian superstar Djokovic qualified for the event by virtue of beating Nishikori to make the US Open final, this resulted in an automatic qualification for six-time champion Federer due to the Grand Slam Champion Rule. This rule reserves one spot in the event for a current-year Grand Slam titlist who finishes the ATP Race to London between Nos. 8-20. The US Open final contested between Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro meant that Federer would have been the only reigning Grand Slam holder yet to qualify, as a win for del Potro would have accumulated enough points to seal his spot in the Nitto ATP finals.

The Swiss maestro is guaranteed to finish the race in the Top 20 and could even finish as high as 7, hence his qualification. US Open champion Djokovic has made ten consecutive appearances at the world tour finals from 2007-2016, with titles from 2008, 2012-15. He has also been runner-up once, to Andy Murray in 2016. The resurgent Serb has enjoyed a stellar second half of the season since returning from his elbow injury, capped with titles at Wimbledon, Cincinnati and most recently at the US Open.

Australian Open champion Federer is poised to make his 16th appearance at the ATP finals, boasting a record six titles in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011. The 37-year old began the year by lifting the Australian Open title after defeating Cilic in five-sets, he backed up that performance by winning the ABN AMRO title in Rotterdam to rise to World No.1, making him the oldest player to attain the top spot. He also won his 98th career singles title at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart and finished runner-up to del Potro and Coric in Indian Wells and Halle respectively.

US Open finalist del Potro is next in line to qualify, followed closely by Zverev, Cilic, Anderson and Thiem.

The 2018 Nitto ATP finals is live from the O2 Arena in London from 11-18 November.
