Day 7 ✅

And with that shock but also in a way expected retirement, Day 7 is done and dusted.

So disappointing for Djokovic, but there's a reason nobody has defended the US Open on the men's side since 2008 - it's late in the season and almost everyone is battling niggling injuries of some kind. But Djokovic's was obviously too much to handle tonight.

In saying that, big moment for Wawrinka after all of his own injury troubles. He's got a winnable quarter-final next against Daniil Medvedev, and as we know, he's got what it takes to go all the way in New York.

We've got another big day in prospect tomorrow, with World No. 1 Naomi Osaka looking to continue her title defence against Belinda Bencic in the fourth round, while Rafael Nadal headlines the night session against 2014 champion Marin Cilic.

Until then, goodnight!
03:47 02 Sep

Djokovic retires...

Djokovic retires after Wawrinka breaks in the third set. The shoulder not up to the task.

Shame the match had to end that way, because Wawrinka was playing brilliantly, but not to be.

The defending champion is out and Wawrinka is into a quarter-final showdown against Daniil Medvedev.
03:40 02 Sep

Djokovic gets the shoulder worked on

Djokovic's shoulder didn't seem to bother him against Denis Kudla in the previous round, but he's got the trainer out for a rub down during the break.

Long way back here for the defending champion, but if anyone has a five-set comeback in them, it's Novak Djokovic...
03:34 02 Sep

Wawrinka leads 6-4 7-5

Can Wawrinka hold his nerve and serve here?

Big return from Djokovic and he forces the error for 0-15 - but he follows that up with a shank backhand return and it's 15-15.

Djokovic misses the return again and Wawrinka is two points away. 30-15.

Big serve down the tee and Wawrinka has two set points. 40-15...

He misses the first one as he fires a backhand pass inches long... One more chance coming up...

Wow - Djokovic dishes up a terrible drop shot and that's it - the defending champion is down two sets to love

Wawrinka leading 6-4 7-5!
03:30 02 Sep

Wawrinka breaks for 6-5!

And Wawrinka keeping his foot on the pedal as he races to 0-30 on Djokovic's serve. This match could be blown wide open if the Swiss can keep up this level towards the end of this set...

But Djokovic responds with an ace for 15-30 - and then questionably decides to serve and volley on second serve! Djokovic can't pick up the volley and it's double break point for Wawrinka!

And he takes it as Djokovic can't handle a stinging Wawrinka backhand at net....

Wawrinka to serve for a two-set lead next... And the crowd erupts for him!
03:27 02 Sep

Wawrinka holds for 5-5

These baseline exchanges are heating up nicely now!

Wawrinka wins the first point for 15-0 after another punishing rally. Djokovic stops play to challenge in the next point - and he shouldn't of, because that ball was inside the line. Wawrinka up 30-0.

An absolutely MASSIVE backhand cross court draws the error from Djokovic and Wawrinka has the chance to close out this game at love.

Which he does with a serve/forehand winner combo. Statement hold for Wawrinka. 5-5.
03:23 02 Sep

Djokovic saves break point for 5-4

Djokovic digs himself out of some big trouble to slow Wawrinka's momentum, saving break point with a great serve out wide and closing out the game with a pristine volley after superb point construction.

Pressure back on the Swiss as Wawrinka serves to stay in the set at 4-5.
03:18 02 Sep

Wawrinka holds and levels for 4-4

Wawrinka equals his fastest serve of the night and he holds to love, backing up his break for 4-4.

Some big moments coming up in the next 10/15 minutes here...
03:16 02 Sep

Wawrinka breaks back!

Wawrinka steps it up big time in that game, especially on his glorious backhand, hitting with great depth as he forces the break on Djokovic. He's back on serve at 3-4 in the second.
02:57 02 Sep

Djokovic breaks to open second set

Poor game there from Wawrinka - not enough first serves and he sends a backhand long as Djokovic breaks to open the second set for 2-0.
02:43 02 Sep

SET Wawrinka: 6-4

Wawrinka claims the first point as Djokovic dumps a backhand return into the net.

But Djokovic responds with a decent drop shot and Wawrinka can't retrieve it as he finds the net himself. 15-15.

WHAT A POINT!

Djokovic goes for the drop shot again, but this time Wawrinka gets to it - Djokovic returns with a lob, the Swiss gets back in time with a deep shot of his own and then steps back into the court with a punishing forehand winner. 30-15.

But that point took a lot out of him and he promptly fires a backhand wide. 30-30. But he doesn't miss with that backhand cross court - set point for the Swiss...

And he wins it with a big first serve - Wawrinka up 6-4 as Djokovic starts to shake out that shoulder...
02:40 02 Sep

Wawrinka to serve for first set

Djokovic holds to 30 with a nice backhand winner down the line, but Wawrinka will have the chance to serve out the opening set at 5-4 next...
02:28 02 Sep

Wawrinka consolidates for 4-2

Some massive serving bails Wawrinka out of trouble as the Swiss recovers from 15-40 to consolidate the break for 4-2.

Djokovic easily could be the man up a break, but he's not winning the crucial points to start this one...
02:23 02 Sep

Wawrinka strikes first

Well well well...

Loose game here from Djokovic as Wawrinka creates triple break point following a backhand error from the Serbian.

Djokovic saves the first one after Wawrinka sends a backhand long, but he can't save the second as the World No. 1 comes up with another error.

First blood to Wawrinka as the Swiss moves ahead 3-2.
02:17 02 Sep

Wawrinka saves break point for 2-2

Djokovic made a real push that game, dragging Wawrinka into a lot of extended rallies, but the Swiss is up to the challenge as he saves a break point with some big serving and holds for 2-2.
02:11 02 Sep

Djokovic holds for 2-1

Djokovic's two-hander comes out on top during that backhand exchange with Wawrinka's one-hander as the defending champion holds for 2-1.

Both players striking the ball cleanly to start this one.
01:54 02 Sep

Djokovic vs Wawrinka - live now!

Who's ready for the biggest match of the R16 so far?!

It's a rematch of the 2016 US Open final as Novak Djokovic takes on Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss famously came out on top that night to win his third Grand Slam title - can he reproduce that kind of tennis tonight? Or will the World No. 1 continue his title defence and advance into the QFs?

Strap yourselves in, this could be a cracker!
01:28 02 Sep

GSM Svitolina 7-5 6-4

It's been almost the perfect match by Svitolina on serve - can she handle the pressure as she tries to close it out and inflict what would be a first ever loss at night for Keys at the US Open?

Great start - solid first serve and Keys dumps the return into the net. 15-0.

And now 30-0 after Keys nets another backhand. Just too many errors from the American tonight. Yet another netted backhand from Keys and it's triple match point for Svitolina.

And she takes it - GSM Svitolina 7-5 6-4. Simply sublime serving performance from the fifth seed and she's into a first ever US Open quarter-final against Jo Konta.
01:13 02 Sep

Svitolina up a break in the second

Meanwhile, the consistency of Svitolina is coming out on top over the power of Keys, with the fifth seed leading 7-5 3-2 with a break in the second set.
01:09 02 Sep

Medvedev invites more boos...

Medvedev strutting his way into the quarter-finals and addressing the crowd once more...

00:58 02 Sep

GSM Medvedev in four

Meanwhile, Medvedev and Koepfer into a fourth set tiebreak - can the qualifier extend this match into a fifth? The crowd are certainly getting behind him.

But not a good start from Koepfer as he double faults to begin the breaker...

The German goes after a forehand, but he strikes it just long and Medvedev moves ahead 2-0 - and an ace from the Russian sees him take command, leading 3-0.

Koepfer gets on the board as Medvedev hits a forehand long - he needed that point. But Medvedev's maddening consistency forces Koepfer into another error and the fifth seed has another mini-break for 4-1. Long way back for the qualifier now...

And even longer after Medvedev baits the German into another error. 5-1...

Ace for Medvedev and he has five match points. Koepfer saves one with a blistering backhand, but he can't save another as he hits a forehand long.

Medvedev is into his first Grand Slam quarter-final - and he mocks the crowd again with as he pulls out a strange little strut on his way to the net, before inviting more boos in his celebration.

This guy!
00:53 02 Sep

SET Svitolina: 7-5

Great point construction from Svitolina as she fires an off forehand winner in the forecourt for 15-0.

Big forehand return from Keys and she's level at 15-15. But a pinpoint forehand up the line that lands directly on the line sees Svitolina edge ahead for 30-15 - and a good serve sees the fifth seed create two set points.

And she only needs one as Keys fires a backhand wide.

Svitolina wins the opening set 7-5, winning 24/29 points on serve and with seven winners to six unforced errors. Keys on the other hand has come undone by 21 errors, despite 20 winners.

The more steady and consistent player in the lead...
00:52 02 Sep

Svitolina breaks!

Svitolina makes her move at 5-5 and claims the first break of the match after Keys misses a forehand into the net.

The fifth seed will serve for the set next - she's won 20/24 points behind her serve so far...
00:34 02 Sep

Keys and Svitolina on serve

No breaks or break points yet between Keys and Svitolina, with the pair cruising behind their own serves. As expected, Keys is the one dictating play, with 13 winners to 11 unforced errors, while Svitolina has struck just two winners but only five errors.

Keys extended to deuce there, but a big forehand winner followed up by a good serve up the tee sees her hold for 4-3.
00:32 02 Sep

Medvedev saves break points for 2-2

Medvedev recovers from 15-40 with some booming serves to level at 2-2 with Koepfer in the fourth.

The Russian would want to avoid a fifth here, especially with Djokovic or Wawrinka waiting in the QFs...
00:14 02 Sep

SET Medvedev 6-2

Medvedev rolling out there now, saving break points while serving at 3-2 and then storming to the set on the back of four straight games, taking it 6-2.

The fifth seed is one set away from a first major quarter-final.
00:10 02 Sep

Svitolina vs Keys - live now!

The first night match on Ashe is about to get underway as fifth seed Elina Svitolina takes on Cincinnati champion Madison Keys for the third time.

Svitolina is looking to make her first U.S. Open quarter-final, while Keys is aiming for her 10th straight victory - the American won their first clash at this stage two years ago before advancing all the way to the final, but Svitolina got the victory at the Australian Open earlier this year. Both matches went three sets - are we set to go the distance again tonight?
00:05 02 Sep

Medvedev leads Koepfer 3-6 6-3 3-2

Medvedev started slowly as qualifier Koepfer got off to a dream start, but the fifth seed has fought back, taking the second set and going ahead by a break, 3-2 in the third.

The Russian leads 3-6 6-3 3-2.
22:32 01 Sep

LIVE NOW: Daniil Medvedev vs Dominik Koepfer

Daniil Medvedev is taking on German qualifier, Dominik Koepfer in the fourth round of the US Open- can the Cincinnati champion continue his amazing run of form, and move into his first Grand Slam quarter final?

Or can Koepfer upset the Russian., and keep up this fairytale run?
21:03 01 Sep

Serena opens with a double fault, but she races up the court and puts away a short forehand winner for 15-15...

She finds a fantastic angle on a forehand to reach 30-15, and again for 40-15. Terrific accurate hitting from the great champion...

Two match points...

And she needs only one, as she powers an ace down the middle to close out a 6-3 6-4 victory! A spectacular finish from the legendary American!

99 match wins for Serena at the US Open, she will go for No. 100 when she plays Qiang Wang in the last eight.

20:45 01 Sep

Serena holds after Medical Time Out, 6-3 4-2

The American double faults on the first point of the game, but she puts away a forehand winner to reach 15-all...

30-15 to Serena as Martic drives a forehand long, and a missed backhand return from the Croatian gives Serena two game points. Two forehand errors from Serena takes the game back to deuce, but she moves within a point of the game with a serve-forehand winner one-two punch. She closes the game with a second serve ace down the middle.

Apart from that double fault to start the game, there was no obvious discomfort from that ankle problem...

She's two games away from the quarter finals.
20:34 01 Sep

Serena Williams rolls her ankle, trainer out

Big moment this as Serena Williams rolls her ankle and takes a tumble while chasing down a short ball...

She reaches match point when Pliskova's return flies long, but she makes a backhand error as the game returns to deuce

Konta's forehand takes over in the next point, pushing Pliskova around and earning the short ball, which she duly puts away, and she seals the win when Pliskova sends a forehand long!

Dimitrov two sets up on De Minaur 7-5 6-3

Former world No. 3, Grigor Dimitrov is a set away from the US Open quarter finals- the Bulgarian has just taken the second set against Alex De Minaur!

An ace down the T brings up set point, and he converts when De Minaur overhits a groundstroke. It's been a very good match to watch, but Dimitrov's greater firepower and variety is winning the day so far...

Federer has the two sets to love lead, and we haven't even played an hour!

The Swiss pummels a forehand winner cross court to bring up set point, and a sharp backhand return gets a netted response from Goffin.

He is battering Goffin here...

Konta up a break on Pliskova 3-2

18:09 01 Sep

Federer breaks again 6-2 4-2

Oh dear...

Goffin attempts a serve and volley, but the volley part doesnt get over the net... Break point Federer, and the Swiss converts when Goffin wastefully dumps a backhand into the net.

Federer has his break back. 4-2.

Federer double faults on break point! Back on serve 6-2 3-2

Federer takes the first set against Goffin 6-2

Federer in command against Goffin

Wang takes out Barty 6-2 6-4

Positive point from Barty to open, as she puts away a forehand winner...

0-30 as Wang's forehand loops over the baseline...

Good response from Wang as a hard, deep forehand draws the forehand error from Barty, but she dumps a backhand into the net to give up two break points...

Poor forehand error from Barty on the first break break point, been a lot of that in the last few minutes, and another forehand error, this one clipping the tape and flying out, gets this back to deuce...

Match point Wang as Barty sprays a forehand wide, but Barty responds with a no-holds-barred inside-in forehand. Deuce.

Wangs brings up a fourth match point with a well-placed fire serve, and she completes the upset when Barty's backhand return flies long.

A terrific match from Wang, who proceeds into her first Grand Slam quarter final!

She will play Serena Williams or Petra Martic!
17:25 01 Sep

Barty saves two match points and holds! 2-6 4-5

Good fight by Barty as she fends off two match points and holds to keep this match going.

Wang to serve for the match...

Federer needed four sets to get through his first two matches, but he turned it on against Daniel Evans in the third round, beating the Brit in straight sets...

How will he fare against David Goffin today? The Swiss has won eight of their nine previous matches...

Wang saves breaks points and holds for 6-2 5-3

Looks like the real Ashlight Barty has finally arrived, but is it an hour too late?

She laces a backhand down the line for 15-30, and that becomes 15-40 as Wang missesthe line with a forehand...

Long rally ends with Barty's slices backhand just failing to clear the net, and the second break point disappears when her backhand return in the doubles alley

This is a lot better from Barty as she brings up another break point with some lovely variety, ooooh, poor error from the Australian as her backhand drifts over the baseline. Deuce

This could be the match here...

Barty slices into the net again to give Wang a game point, but the Australian steps on to the front foot, pushes Wang around and wins the point to get back to deuce

There's another break point for Barty as Wang's forehand goes long, but we are back to deuce as yet again, Barty slices a backhand into the net. Wow! Will these missed chances come back to hunt here...

Yep. Wang finally wins consecutive points to bag a mighty hold. Huge hold. She leads 6-2 5-3

Barty holds from 0-30, trails 6-2 3-2

Barty is in trouble again as she slips to 0-30 on her serve, but the Australian digs deep to hold, ending the game with consecutive aces.

Good hold, but now, she needs to find a break back from somewhere...
16:54 01 Sep

Barty holds to love, but trails 6-2 2-1

Barty bags a rare hold to love- could that spark a fightback from the world No. 2?
16:52 01 Sep

Wang saves break point, and holds for 6-2 2-0

Opportunity for Barty as she gets to break point, but she sprays a backhand wide... bad bad error...

Superb forehand down the line from Wang gets her to game point, and she sends an ace down the middle to consolidate.
16:47 01 Sep

Barty broken at the start of the second set, trails Wang 2-6 0-1

More words from Ashleigh Barty towards her box as things go from bad to worse...

She sees a 40-15 lead disappear, and then slices a backhand into the net to concede the first game of the second set.

The world No. 2 hasn't quite arrived at this party yet...
16:41 01 Sep

Wang serves out the first set against Barty 6-2

Barty punctuates a long rally with a cross-court forehand winner for the first point of the game, and she reaches 30-0 as an attempted Barty drop shot lands in the net...

Barty then makes an absolute harsh of an overhead smash to gift Wang three set points, and the Chinese converts at the second opportunity off another Barty error- this time, a backhand slice that drifts long.

Barty all over the place, Wang super solid and efficient.
16:35 01 Sep

Barty holds, but Wang to serve for the set at 5-2

Ashleigh Barty snaps a five-game losing streak and holds for 2-5, but she's still a long way brhind in this opening set.

Wang will serve for the set. Next.
16:33 01 Sep

Wang holds from 15-40, 5-1

Barty has two break points at 15-40, but she slices a backhand long on the first break point, and then sprays a backhand well wide on the second.

Wang puts away two short balls to hold for 5-1.
16:28 01 Sep

Barty broken again! Wang up a double break, 4-1

Ashleigh Barty is not a happy woman at the moment, and you can understand why.

It's been a shocking start from the world No. 2, who now trails by a double break against Qiang Wang.

She slips to 15-40 with a double fault, and concedes the game with a wayward forehand into the tramlines.

Barty turns to her corner, and has a few words to say.

I obviously have no idea what she's saying...
16:21 01 Sep

Wang up an early break on Barty 2-1

A good start for China's Qiang Wang, who breaks world No. 2, Ashleigh Barty to take a 2-1 lead in this fourth round tie.

US Open Day 7 Live Blog

Welcome to our US Open live blog for Day 7.

As usual, some cracking matches on the menu- Roger Federer continues his quest for a record-breaking sixth title as he takes on David Goffin, while defending champion, Novak Djokovic faces 2015 winner, Stan Wawrinka in a match I'm really looking forward to seeing.

We know Stan the Man, on his day, can give Djokovic plenty of problems- can he bring his A game to Ashe later tonight?

In the women's draw, Serena Williams is back on court today as she plays Petra Martic, and how about Elina Svitolina vs Madison Keys? Those two have been in some terrific form this week...

There's of course, a lot more on Sunday's menu...

Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka collide in a rematch of their 2016 U.S. Open final as fourth round action gets underway on Sunday September 1, with Roger Federer and Serena Williams also featured on today’s order of play: live scores, commentary and updates on Day 7 of the U.S. Open from Flushing Meadows.

(geo restrictions apply; funded account required or to have placed a bet in the last 24 hours to qualify)

The first week is in the books and now we can look forward to some juggernaut tennis between the sport’s heavyweights as the road to the finals becomes clearer each day.

We’ve got some fantastic matches to witness today, highlighted by Novak Djokovic vs Stan Wawrinka, which closes out the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Djokovic, who is aiming to become the first man to defend the U.S. Open title since 2008, leads their head-to-head 19-5, but they’ve had some enormous battles in Grand Slams over their careers, including the 2016 U.S. Open final, which Wawrinka won in four sets and remains the last time the pair met. Wawrinka also beat Djokovic for the 2015 French Open title and owns a win over the Serbian at the 2014 Australian Open, so the Swiss certainly lifts for the best-of-five clash against the World No. 1 - can he do it again under the lights? Djokovic’s suspect shoulder pulled up fine in his easy win over Denis Kudla and he will be hoping he’s at absolute full fitness for the challenge of Wawrinka.

Five-time champion and the last man to defend the U.S. Open title, Roger Federer looks to avoid another shock fourth round exit (after losing to John Millman at this stage 12 months ago) when he comes up against 15th seed David Goffin. Federer has been dominant over Goffin throughout their careers, and although the Belgian has put together a mini-resurgence over the last month, making the Cincinnati final, it would be a massive surprise if he was able to beat Federer in Grand Slam play.

Serena Williams then continues her bid for an elusive 24th major title against 22nd seed Petra Martic, who has been having a tremendous season. Serena has been excellent in two of her three matches in New York - what type of tennis will she produce against Martic, who will be hoping it’s the level the American dished up against Caty McNally in the second round, because if it is, the Croatian will fancy her chances for the upset.

Madison Keys, the 2017 U.S. Open runner-up, will be hoping she’s over the worst of her health problems that threatened to derail her third round win over Sofia Kenin as she looks to avenge an Australian Open fourth round loss to Elina Svitolina, who is coming off a crushing 6-2 6-0 win over Dayana Yastremska.

Ash Barty vs Wang Qiang and Karolina Pliskova vs Johanna Konta kick off the action over on Louis Armstrong, while New York public enemy No. 1 Daniil Medvedev returns to the court and crowd he mocked 48 hours ago as he tries to make a first Grand Slam quarter-final against Dominik Koepfer - the German qualifier who has already won six matches at Flushing Meadows over the last two weeks and is having the run of his life.

Grigor Dimitrov and Alex de Minaur also face off for the right to make a first U.S. Open quarter-final, while doubles and junior action continues around the grounds.

It’s all shaping up to be another unmissable day of tennis as the second week begins and the action starts to heat up! Join us here for our live blog as we cover all the latest live scores, results, breaking news and more live from Flushing Meadows.
