Sloane Stephens recorded an emphatic win over Urszula Radwanska on Wednesday to book her place in the third round of the US Open.
Sloane Stephens struggled in her first match at the 2013 US Open but she produced a polished performance on Wednesday night to ease her way into round three. Stephens had to wait until 11:53pm for the start of her meeting with Urszula Radwanska, but the wait didn't take anything away from her efforts. She wasted little time as she defeated the Pole 6-1, 6-1.
"I just had a goal, I was going to come out here and play aggressive, not miss a ball and make her work. That's all I can do," said Stephens in her on-court interview. "I have nothing to lose. It's the U.S. Open so might as well come out and swing and have fun and I think that's what I did tonight."
"I never started that late. It was definitely a long experience," said Stephens. As it happens, only one match in US Open history had started later than Stephens v Radwanska, and this was a contest in 1987 played between Gabriela Sabatini and Beverly Bowes. "But I played good. Maybe I should do that more often," added the young American.
Stephens will now take on her compatriot and Fed Cup teammate Jamie Hampton in the third round. "It's always tough playing obviously another American. Jamie is a good friend. Obviously it will be a good match," said Stephens. "Playing at the U.S. Open, it's a pretty big deal. I'm looking forward to it."
