USA vs Switzerland Previews and Predictions

Madison Keys (USA) vs Viktorija Golubic (SUI)

Charleston champion, Madison Keys gets the USA's bid to retain their World Group status underway when she takes on Swiss, Viktorija Golubic in the tie's first rubber.

Keys was a member of the American team that fell to Australia in the World Group quarter finals in February, going 1-1 in her singles' matches, defeating Kimberly Birrell, but losing to Aussie No. 1, Ashleigh Barty. Overall, she is 4-3 in Fed Cup singles rubbers.

The former US Open finalist has struggled with form and injuries over the last couple of seasons, and 2019 has been no exception, as she has played just four WTA tournaments so far this season. She opened the year with a fourth round run at the Australian Open, but did not play again until Indian Wells in March (the Fed Cup tie against Australia aside). Keys lost back-to-back opening matches at Indian Wells and Miami, but she found some really good form in Charleston, beating Grand Slam champions, Jelena Ostapenko, Sloane Stephens and Caroline Wozniacki en route her first title since 2017.

Will she bring that form to the Fed Cup arena as she attempts to help the Americans stay in the elite division?

Saturday's opponent, Golubic has a 3-4 record in Fed Cup matches, with one of her victories coming in the World Group II quarter final in February, when Switzerland defeated Italy to earn a shot at a return to the World Group via the play-offs. That victory over Camila Giorgi ended a three-match losing streak in the competition for Golubic, who has not won a singles match since the 2016 semi-finals, when she beat both Karolina Pliskova and Barbora Strycova in an inspired, but losing effort as the Swiss fell to the Czechs.

She will be hoping to recreate her 2016 form as she takes on Keys in San Antonio on Saturday.

Golubic's finest moment this season came in the United States, when she win the WTA 125K tournament at Indian Wells- while her only other notable result was a quarter final in Hua Hin.

Keys was a comfortable 6-1 6-2 victor in the only previous meeting in Miami in 2017, and the American is again the favourite to take down the Swiss and give the hosts the perfect start.

Sloane Stephens (USA) vs Timea Bacsinszky (SUI)

Following Keys and Golubic will be Sloane Stephens and Timea Bacsinszky, who will have the chance to either consolidate their team's position or get them back on level terms.

Stephen's Fed Cup record is split at 4-4, with her most recent appearance coming in the 2018 semi-final against France, when she defeated Pauline Parmentier and Kristina Mladenovic to help the United States into the final. Unfortunately, she skipped the final as the US fell to the Czech Republic.

Stephens had been part of the finals squad in the 2017 season, but she lost both of her matches against Aryna Sabalenka and Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Her teammates however came to the rescue, with CoCo Vandeweghe playing a starring role as the USA defeated Belarus to end their 17-year Fed Cup title drought.

Stephens heads into this Fed Cup tie on the back of a poor season. She has made just one quarter final- in Charleston, and is only 8-7 for the year.

The American faces an intriguing Fed Cup tie on Saturday as she runs in Timea Bacsinszky, who has been a mainstay in Switzerland's Fed Cup journey. Bacsinszky holds a 20-17 record in singles matches, and was a prominent member of the team that made consecutive semi-finals in 2016 and 2017. The former Roland Garros semi-finalist has had her problems with injuries over the last couple of seasons and is now ranked at No. 111 in the world, but can she reproduce the form that once took her into the top ten to propel the Swiss back into the World Group?

Bacsinszky fell to Sloane Stephens in straight sets in their only previous meeting in Luxembourg in 2013, and despite Stephens’ dodgy form, the Swiss will again start this one as the underdog.

USA vs Switzerland: Tie Information

Location: San Antonio, USA

Venue: Freeman Coliseum, San Antonio

Surface: Indoor hard

USA: Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys, Sofia Kenin, Jessica Pegula, Jennifer Brady, Kathy Rinaldi (captain)

Switzerland: Viktorija Golubic, Timea Bacsinszky, Conny Perrin, Ylena In-Albon, Heinz Guenthardt (captain)

The United States are the most successful nation in Fed Cup history, and have made the finals in each of the last two seasons, winning one and losing the other. However, their quest for three straight finals was terminated by Ashleigh Barty and her Australian colleagues in February's quarter finals. The 18-time champions must now defeat Switzerland to keep their place in the top division. Their quest is spearheaded by top-20 stars American No. 1, Sloane Stephens and No. 3, Madison Keys, and they go into this one in San Antonio as the heavy favourites.

That's partly because Switzerland are without their own top-20 star, Belinda Bencic, and have Viktorija Golubic, at 80th in the world, as their top-ranked player for this tie. The visitors do have former top-ten player and Roland Garros semi-finalist, Timea Bacsinszky in their ranks, but she is currently outside the top 100 following several battles with injuries. Switzerland had a really good period some three years ago, when they reached consecutive semi-finals in 2016 and 2017, but they slipped out of the World Group after losing to Romania in last year's play-offs. The 1998 runners-up eased past Italy in February's World Group II tie to move up to the play-offs, and will now attempt to get back into the World Group at the first time of asking.

It's going to be extremely difficult for the Swiss, a point accentuated by a 0-8 Fed Cup record against this weekend's opponents.
