Alison Riske wins on resumption

After a 17-minute break as the roof is closed, Alison Riske breaks Donna Vekic's serve and closes the match out to 15 for a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.

The 's-Hertogenbosch champion ousts the 22nd seed, moves into the second round to face Ivana Jorovic, and wraps up play on day 2 of Wimbledon.
21:12 02 Jul

The No. 1 Court roof is closing!

For the first time we'll see Wimbledon's second, brand-new roof in all its glory as it closes to ensure that Vekic vs Riske can continue in fading light.

We're a couple of minutes into a ten-minute break to allow the roof to close. Riske came back from 1-4 down in this set and just had a couple of break points at 4-4, but Vekic fended them off in a marathon hold. It's now 5-5.
20:44 02 Jul

Marin Cilic into second round

Cilic wraps up a 7-6(6), 7-6(4), 6-3 victory over Adrian Mannarino and will face Joao Sousa in the second round.
20:41 02 Jul

Andy Murray to play mixed doubles with Serena Williams!

IT'S CONFIRMED

20:36 02 Jul

Vekic up 3-0 in the third

Now it's Vekic's turn to bounce back and she's done so admirably, breaking Riske and consolidating to lead 3-0.

Three aces and four winners off the ground already for the Croatian.
20:26 02 Jul

Vekic & Riske split sets

'S-Hertogenbosch champion Riske bounces back from losing the first set to level up 3-6, 6-3 vs 22nd seed Vekic.

It's getting on to 8.30pm in the UK - will they consider closing the new No. 1 Court roof to ensure this match finishes?
20:17 02 Jul

Fabio Fognini beats Tiafoe in five

It's the 12th seed and Monte-Carlo Masters champion who comes through the five-set clash with the Australian Open quarterfinalist Frances Tiafoe.

Despite both ankles/calves being taped, Fognini wins 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 - and takes great delight in conducting the singing from the Italian contingent of the partisan crowd.

He'll face Marton Fucsovics or Denis Novak in the second round.
20:13 02 Jul

Cilic up two sets

I really thought Marin Cilic might struggle here, after such a poor season and against a good grass-court player and tricky foe in Adrian Mannarino.

Well, it's tight, but so far it's 13th-seeded Cilic who's had the best of it. He leads Mannarino 7-6(6), 7-6(4).

19:49 02 Jul

Fognini has the early break

In the fifth set, Fognini has broken to lead 2-1 - not really a banner day for Tiafoe on serve, despite 12 aces; he's now been broken six times.

Mind, Fognini had the break in the fourth set too and couldn't hold on to it when it came to the crunch.
19:48 02 Jul

Vekic impressing on No. 1 Court

After trailing 0-2 and getting on the board with that marathon hold for 1-2, Donna Vekic has barely looked back.

She's up 6-3 on Alison Riske, and pressing hard for a break in the second.
19:43 02 Jul

Kiki Bertens safely through to R2

Fifth seed Bertens joins Barty, Kerber, Kvitova, Serena and the rest in the second round as she wraps up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mandy Minella.

Plain sailing really for Madrid champion Bertens against a player who doesn't have the weapons to contend with her, but a strong performance overall and she will face a very different challenge against crafty left-hander Taylor Townsend in the second round.
19:39 02 Jul

Tiafoe takes the fourth set!

The American breaks back to 4-4, then breaks to take the match to a fifth as Fognini serves his second double-fault of the set on break point down at 4-5.

Going the distance with chants of 'TI-A-FOE, TI-A-FOE' ringing out.
19:30 02 Jul

Fognini closing in

He's up two sets to one on Frances Tiafoe and has the break to lead 4-3 in the fourth.
19:25 02 Jul

Mothers taking centre stage

Someone just pointed this out on Twitter and it is very cool.

Serena Williams, of course, has adorable daughter Alexis Olympia. Tatjana Maria's daughter Charlotte was born in 2013, and Mandy Minella has a daughter too - Emma Lina, born 2017.
19:22 02 Jul

Bertens looking good

The fifth seed tales the first set 6-3 and is on serve with Minella early in the second.

She looks rather nervous, despite perfectly solid grass-court preparation (runner-up in 's-Hertogenbosch, Eastbourne semifinalist), and it's tempting to attribute that to the Centre Court effect. But she's got the game to play here many more times ...
19:16 02 Jul

'WHOOO!'

That's the sound of Donna Vekic celebrating after she gets on the board, holding serve after a marathon 13-deuce game against Riske for 1-2.

The Croatian beams and jokingly checks her watch as she heads to the chair, much to the amusement of the No. 1 Court crowd.
19:03 02 Jul

Promising Vekic-Riske clash moved to No. 1

Just starting on No. 1 Court: A relocated battle between Donna Vekic and Alison Riske, two players who produce some of their absolute best tennis on grass (especially flat-hitting Riske, who pulled off a sensational comeback win over Kiki Bertens in the 's-Hertogenbosch final).

This is a really tough draw for 22nd-seeded Vekic, who's improved immensely over the past year and can be formidable on grass. If she gets through this one she could go far (albeit not too far as she's in the quarter of death) but can she get through this one?

Riske is up an early break with Vekic battling to get on the board at 0-2 down.
19:00 02 Jul

Cilic leads Mannarino 7-6(6)

Not too many have been talking about Marin Cilic in the run-up to Wimbledon - he's had a torrid season as he battles a knee injury, and has not impressed in the run-up.

But he's taken a hard-fought first set over Adrian Mannarino, a very talented veteran, and if the 2017 finalist can get through this one, who knows what might happen ....
18:56 02 Jul

Bertens leads Minella on Centre Court

Ironically, given that the rather shy fifth seed is one of the few players who would probably prefer not to play on Centre Court, Kiki Bertens's match against Mandy Minella has been moved there.

Bertens went out of the French Open in the first round due to illness but she's almost as good on grass as she is on clay - a quarterfinalist last year, don't sleep on Bertens's chances this year. She's up a break, 4-2.
18:34 02 Jul

Nadal vs Kyrgios set for the second round!

It will indeed be Rafael Nadal vs Nick Kyrgios in the second round of Wimbledon as Nadal wraps up a 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Yuichi Sugita.

It's been five years since Kyrgios knocked Nadal out of Wimbledon in 2014 - can the Australian do it again?
18:23 02 Jul

Sharapova giving emotional press conference

A reportedly upset Maria Sharapova is talking to the press after retiring 0-5 down in the decider against Pauline Parmentier.

She also says she probably shouldn't have played the last set at all.

18:20 02 Jul

Fognini takes the second set

This one always had 'five sets' written all over it .. Or perhaps just four, if Fabio Fognini has anything to do with it. He's taken the second set 6-4 vs Frances Tiafoe, and is up a break in the third.
18:16 02 Jul

Serena Williams wins crazy match point

As Gatto-Monticone tries to take it to a tie-break, Williams sets up break/match point with a forehand down the line and a drive volley - then wins a fairly insane point, defending the net frantically until she gets the winning volley past the Italian!

She's into the second round to face Juvan or (Kristyna) Pliskova after a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
18:02 02 Jul

Williams broken serving for the match

Frustration for Serena Williams, who has had her hands full with qualifier Giulia Gatto-Monticone in this second set.

She finally got the break and had the opportunity to close out the match at 6-2, 5-3 - only to be broken back as she sent a forehand long.
17:56 02 Jul

Nadal in cruise control

The two-time Wimbledon champion leads Yuichi Sugita 6-3, 6-1 on No. 1 Court, and looking very comfortable.
17:49 02 Jul

Sharapova retires at 0-5 down in the decider

That's 2004 champion Maria Sharapova out as she retires trailing Pauline Parmentier 6-4, 6-7(4), 0-5.

Sharapova had her left forearm strapped up between the second and third sets and was clearly struggling with it in the decider, and clearly decided she couldn't serve one more time.

A sad end to Sharapova's third match since February, and it's almost more worrying that it wasn't her surgically repaired right shoulder which let her down. The Russian's injury woes continue ...
17:43 02 Jul

Sharapova in real trouble

With her left forearm now heavily taped, Sharapova trails 0-3 in the decider and has won just 3 of the last 17 points as she is broken again by Pauline Parmentier, who leads 4-0.

Sharapova's attempt to rebuild her career after her doping suspension has been constantly derailed by injuries and it looks like it might well be a second consecutive first-round exit from Wimbledon for the former champion.
17:39 02 Jul

Kvitova into second round despite injury

Her participation in this event was in doubt after an arm injury incurred in training for the French Open, but two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has already gone one round further than last year, despite a heavily strapped arm, as she beats Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-2.

Jabeur herself had an injury in preparation, rolling her ankle on the way to the Eastbourne semifinals, so not the sternest test for Kvitova but always good to see the 2011 and 2014 champion smiling at the All-England Club.
17:33 02 Jul

Tiafoe takes first set - trainer out for Fognini

In an intriguing first-round contest, Australian Open quarterfinalist Frances Tiafoe has taken the first set 7-5 over Fabio Fognini.

The Monte-Carlo Masters champion, seeded 12th here, is waiting for the trainer - not clear what the problem actually is - looks like a cut or blister on his finger.

This match could be big, with Dominic Thiem out of this eighth of the draw.
17:29 02 Jul

Former finalist Berdych out

Eastbourne champion Taylor Fritz continues his winning run on grass, ousting 2010 runner-up Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

Berdych, who has been struggling with various injuries including his hip, has been talking recently about needing to consider when to call time on his career - hopefully this isn't the last time we see him on court at Wimbledon.
17:27 02 Jul

Serena leads 6-2

The 7-time champion breaks Giulia Gatto-Monticone to love to take the first set on Centre Court.
17:25 02 Jul

Wrist issue for Sharapova

I thought we were waiting for Parmentier to get back from the bathroom, but actually we were waiting for the trainer for Sharapova.

It seems to be an issue with her left hand or wrist - she's now taking a medical time-out.
17:23 02 Jul

Sharapova headed to a decider

Pauline Parmentier takes the second set in a tie-break to level up with the Russian - four double faults from Sharapova, only 22% of second-serve points won, 16 UFEs and 12 winners in that second set.

Sharapova sucks down energy gels in her chair.
17:15 02 Jul

First set Nadal! 6-3

Slow start from Nadal, but the two-time champion fights back from a break down to take the opening set after 45 minutes.
17:11 02 Jul

Nadal breaks, and is serving for the first set! 5-3

16:58 02 Jul

Nadal back on track on Court 1... 3-2

Two time champion, Rafael Nadal trailed 0-2, and had to hold from 0-40 to avoid going down 0-3, but he's won three games in a row to get things back on serve...

Can he kick on from here?
16:52 02 Jul

Serena Williams on Centre Court

Serena Williams is about to launch her 2019 Wimbledon campaign...

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is taking on the unheralded Giulia Gatto-Monticone...

Shouldn't be a problem for the legendary American, you would think...
16:47 02 Jul

Nadal down a break against Sugita

Well, he's quite fortunate he's only down a break, as he could easily have been down a double break.

The great Spaniard dodges that bullet by holding from 0-40.

Sugita leads 2-1...
16:45 02 Jul

Sharapova closing in on second round spot

Stuck somewhere in the Wimbledon draw is former champion, Maria Sharapova, who is 6-4 4-2 up on Frenchwoman, Pauline Parmentier in her opening match...

Tough season for Maria with injuries- this is only her fifth tournament...
16:39 02 Jul

Federer beats Harris 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-2 to move into Round 2

Ultimately comfortable in the end for Federer after that early scare, as the eight-time champion recovers from the loss of the first set to beat South Africa's Lloyd Harris in his Wimbledon 2019 opener.

96th match win for Federer at Wimbledon- the great man will take on Jay Clarke or Noah Rubin in the second round.
16:34 02 Jul

2017 champion, Muguruza out!

26th seed, Garbine Muguruza is the latest big name to fall.

The former world No. 1 exits the tournament after a 6-4 6-4 loss to Brazilian, Beatriz Haddad Maia.

16:28 02 Jul

Nadal taking on Sugita in Wimbledon opener

World No. 2, Rafael Nadal is about to start his bid for a third Wimbledon title as he takes on former top-40 player, Yuichi Sugita.

Qualifier, Sugita possesses a grass-court title from Antalya in 2017, but he has struggled badly in the last year and a half, and is currently ranked outside the top-200...

Nadal has suffered many shock losses at the All England Club over the last decade, and so, nothing should be taken for granted, especially given the upset bug blowing across Wimbledon.

But surely, the great man cannot possibly lose to Sugita, who is playing his first tour-level main draw match of the season?
16:23 02 Jul

Nadal on Court 1

Look who's made his way on to Court 1...

It's only Rafael Nadal!

Why does he always look angry though?
16:12 02 Jul

Konta through to Round 2

Just a quick check around the grounds...

British No. 1, Johanna Konta has beaten Ana Bogdan 7-5 6-2 to book a spot in the second round, where she'll play Katerina Siniakova, while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga rolls past Bernard Tomic 6-2 6-1 6-4 to set up a second round meeting with Denis Shapovalov or Ricardas Berankis.
16:09 02 Jul

Leg injury for Harris

Harris is having his left leg attended to by the trainer, which is the last thing he needs if he's harbouring any hopes of the most unlikely fightback...

Medical Time Out for the South African...
16:07 02 Jul

Federer takes the third set against Harris 3-6 6-1 6-2

No problems for Federer in closing out the third set...

An ace down the middle brings up set points, and a heavy forehand into Harris' backhand draws the error to finish off the set.

He'll finish this in four, won't he? Or has Harris got anything left?
16:03 02 Jul

Federer breaks again and will serve for the third set. 3-6 6-1 5-2

Turning into a bit of a procession now as Harris sprays a forehand wide while facing a third break point of the game to drop his serve again.

Federer serving for a two sets to one lead...
15:46 02 Jul

Federer gets the early break in the third set! 3-6 6-1 2-1

Federer in control now, as he breaks in the third game of the third set to take a 2-1 lead.
15:41 02 Jul

Konta up a set vs. Bogdan; Muguruza down a set vs.Haddad Maia

Around the grounds now...

British No. 1 took a tight first set against Ana Bogdan 7-5, but 2017 champion, Garbine Muguruza dropped the opening set 6-4 against Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is two sets to the good against Bernard Tomic. 6-2 6-1 1-0...
15:38 02 Jul

Roger Federer takes the second set against Lloyd Harris 3-6 6-1

Normal service has been restored on Centre Court- at least for now- a Roger Federer claims five games in a row to take the second set, and even the contest at one-set all.
15:36 02 Jul

Federer breaks again and will serve for the second set! 3-6 5-1

Looks like Lloyd Harris might have poked a beast here...
15:33 02 Jul

Federer vs Harris 3-6 4-1

Federer backs up the break with a comfortable hold, and walks to his chair with the calmness of a man who has got this under control.

Crisis averted?
15:30 02 Jul

Federer breaks! 3-6 3-1

Oh dear!

Harris does extremely well to got to 30-40 from 0-40, but he makes a completely harsh of an easy forehand on the third break point to drop his serve!

Fightback well and truly on!
15:25 02 Jul

Federer vs Harris 3-6 2-1

Going with serve early in the second set, as Federer rattles through a hold to love to take a 2-1 lead...

Harris' poise, just like his game has been mighty impressive to watch...

He even had the audacity to applaud a Federer winner during that first set. Clearly feels he belongs here...
15:16 02 Jul

Harris takes first set against Federer! 6-3

I mean, I can understand Zverev, Tsitsipas and Thiem going out, but this will count as one of the greatest upsets in Grand Slam history... Still some way to go, obviously...

Playing his first ever match at Wimbledon, 22-year-old Lloyd Harris takes the opening set against eight-time champion, Roger Federer...

Nerveless set of tennis from the young man; saved a break back point with a fine forehand in that last game. Can he keep it up?
15:11 02 Jul

Querrey takes out Thiem! 6-7 7-6 6-3 6-0

Wow! that's three top-ten players now gone from the men's draw inside two days.

Difficult first round for Thiem, and it has proven a hurdle too high for the French Open finalist.

Former Wimbledon semi-finalist, Querrey, who has only just returned from a fairly lengthy injury lay-off rattles through the fourth set to complete a fine four-set win.
15:08 02 Jul

Harris leads Federer 5-2

Erm, what is this?

This Harris guy isn't bad at all, you know?

He isn't fazed by the occasion of his first ever match at Wimbledon either...

Good serve he's got, using all of his 6ft 5in frame to get cheap points off that shot...

Work to do for the mighty Fed...
14:59 02 Jul

Thiem in serious trouble against Querrey

Is Dominic Thiem about to join Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas as first-round top-ten casualties at Wimbledon?

The Austrian trails Sam Querrey by two sets to one, and is down a break in the third set...

Querrey leads 6-7 7-6 6-3 3-0
14:45 02 Jul

Roger Federer about to begin 21st Wimbledon campaign

The mighty Roger Federer is out on Centre Court, set to take on South African debutant, Lloyd Harris.

Federer has won 95 matches at Wimbledon, and his closing in on an amazing century, while the 22-year-old Harris has only ever won one Grand Slam match in his career...

Surely, this is going in only one direction, no?
14:41 02 Jul

Kyrgios beats Thompson in five

Nick Kyrgios dominates the final set to complete a roller-coaster 7-6 3-6 7-6 0-6 6-1 victory over fellow Aussie, Jordan Thompson.

That's one half of the Nadal-Kyrgios second round showdown set.

Rafa to play Yuichi Sugita on Court 1 later today.
14:32 02 Jul

Defending champion, Kerber off and running

Following Barty into the second round is defending champion, Angelique Kerber, who takes down fellow German, Tatjana Maria to set up a second round meeting with American, Lauren Davis.
14:28 02 Jul

World No. 1, Barty eases into the second round

Top seed, Ashleigh Barty joins the second round train with a comfortable 6-4 6-2 victory over Saisai Zheng.

She will play Alison Van Uytvanck in the next round.

Querrey levels up at one-set all against Thiem 6-7 7-6

We knew this could be tight, and it's turning out exactly that way...

Can go absolutely either way, this...
14:18 02 Jul

Barty closing in on victory against Zheng 6-4 4-2

World No. 1, Ashleigh Barty is in cruise control in her Wimbledon opener. The French Open champion is two games away from a second round spot...
14:11 02 Jul

Thompson bagels Kyrgios in the fourth set to force a decider 6-7 6-3 6-7 6-0

Kyrgios got just five points in that third set, winning 29% of points on his first serve.

I'm as confused as you are...

Credit to Thompson for taking full toll, more head-scratching stuff from Kyrgios...
14:08 02 Jul

Kyrgios facing a fourth-set bagel

Now how do you explain this?

Nick Kyrgios has been broken THREE times in this fourth set, with Thompson now serving for the bagel...

Looks like we will need a fifth here...
14:04 02 Jul

Never a dull moment with Nick Kyrgios...

13:58 02 Jul

Kerber, Barty both up a set

Defending champion, Angelique Kerber leads Tatjana Maria 6-4 1-1, while world No. 1, Ashleigh Barty is 6-4 1-0 up on Saisai Zheng...
13:53 02 Jul

Kyrgios takes the third set tie break against Thompson 7-6 3-6 7-6

Eight set points it took, but Nick Kyrgios finally bags the third set to take a two sets to one lead against Jordan Thompson.

Remember, winner here plays Nadal (or Sugita) in the second round...
13:26 02 Jul

Thiem leads Querrey 7-6(4)

French Open finalist Dominic Thiem is in a tie-break with Sam Querrey - and he's up a mini-break, too, 5-3. Querrey narrows the lead with an ace, but Thiem sets up set point with his own big delivery down the centre, and Querrey misses a forehand.

Hawkeye confirms the first set in what could be a very tricky encounter has gone to Thiem ...
13:24 02 Jul

Nishikori safely into second round

He flirted with losing the second set to Thiago Monteiro, as we said, but pulls it together for a nice solid 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-4 win.

He'll face Denis Istomin or Cameron Norrie in the second round.
13:20 02 Jul

Barty off to a flier

Well, so far Ash Barty's making world no. 1 look pretty good. She's taken a 3-0 lead on Zheng Saisai and looks very much like she's going to break the pattern (of losing the first set to the Chinese player) established in their previous meetings.

In other Australian news, Kyrgios and Thompson are locked at 5-5 in the third set and taking it in turns to berate the umpire.
13:11 02 Jul

New world no. 1 Ash Barty in action

Playing her first match since becoming world no. 1, French Open champion Ashleigh Barty is out on No. 1 Court to face Zheng Saisai.

Zheng, interestingly enough, has taken the firs set on both previous occasions these two have played, but lost the second and third.

Barty holds to open.
13:10 02 Jul

Angelique Kerber beginning her title defense

Former world no. 1 Angelique Kerber is back out on Centre Court for the first time since claiming the title in 2018 as she takes on compatriot Tatjana Maria.

This should be a fairly straightforward encounter for the left-hander ...
12:41 02 Jul

Thiem vs Querrey live now

French Open finalist Dominic Thiem is out on No. 2 Court where he's facing a very tough first-round opponent in the form of lanky, big-serving Sam Querrey, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist in 2016 and semifinalist in 2017.

Thiem has only once made it past the second round of Wimbledon - that was in 2017 when he made the round of 16 - and the clay-loving Austrian went out in the first round last year to Marcos Baghdatis, retiring in the third set.

He's 3-1 vs Querrey, but this is their first meeting on grass.
12:38 02 Jul

Thompson levels up 6-7(4), 6-3

Thompson breaks again to level at one set all. Just one place separates these two in the rankings, remember.

Kyrgios has called the physio and seems to be talking about something in his left leg/thigh/groin.
12:35 02 Jul

Thompson closing in on second set

After breaking to lead 4-3, Thompson plays a very, very good game to consolidate and moves ahead 5-3.

He's not letting this match turn into the Nick Kyrgios show.
12:27 02 Jul

Nishikori & early rounds

Remember what I said about Nishikor's tendency to make things unnecessarily complicated in early rounds and how that makes things difficult for him going forwards?

He just got broken serving for a two-sets lead against Thiago Monteiro, who now leads 6-5 in the second.
12:17 02 Jul

Sloane Stephens beats Timea Bacsinszky 6-2, 6-4

Sloane Stephens was up a set and a break on Timea Bacsinszky and looked to be cruising home - and now she isn't. It's 4-5 in the second set.

I circled this as a potential upset because of Stephens's inconsistency, and because Bacsinszky is an accomplished player and a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist, despite the Swiss veteran's struggles with injury.

Stephens herself is a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist, of course, and she sets up match point with a long superbly constructed and patient point, ending with a forehand drive volley, for match point - and converts as Bacsinszky moonballs long. Very solid win for Sloane, who will face Wang Yafan or Tereza Martincova in the second round.
12:03 02 Jul

We have the first winner of the day

Elise Mertens, a former Australian Open semifinalist and champion in Doha earlier this year, wraps up a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Fiona Ferro.

Mertens hasn't done much since winning Doha but the 21-seeded Belgian is a very talented player still working on putting it all together and when she does, it's impressive. She's in a section of the draw where there might be some opportunity, too - the projected third-round opponent in her path, Wang Qiang, is not fond of grass.
11:54 02 Jul

Kyrgios leads 7-6(4)

Tie-break time between Kyrgios and Thompson - and it's Kyrgios who takes an immediate mini-break, but is pegged back 1-1 after a lengthy rally which Thompson closes out at net (good lord, but this grass is slow).

A crisp sequence of powerful forehands from Kyrgios get him the mini-break back for 3-2, the ball absolutely firing off the strings, and he puts some daylight between them with a service winner for 4-2. A delightful drop shot winner puts him up 5-2, and he celebrates furiously, then dances from foot to foot like a boxer as he waits to return serve. We don't often say this but it looks like he really wants to get this win - probably because he knows a shot at Nadal is on the line.

(That doesn't mean he'll still really want the win in half an hour's time, of course. Nick is fire and the wind, do not try to know him.)

Kyrgios tries a tweener off a Thompson drop shot he could have played conventionally. It fails. Thompson closes the gap to 4-5 but NK still has two serves in hand ...

A pair of aces and the set goes to Kyrgios!
11:49 02 Jul

Nishikori up a set on Monteiro

Can we talk about Kei Nishikori for a minute?

He's taken a very routine set against Thiago Monteiro of Brazil, who was not expected to be a threat. But Nishikori has always had a worrying habit of making very heavy weather of early-round opponents, which perhaps contributes to his poorer-than-maybe-expected Grand Slam record. Basically, he seems to spend far too much time and energy on court in the first week, then has little to nothing left physically and mentally with which to challenge the Big Three in the latter stages.

Nishikori has also never shone at Wimbledon as much as might be expected - it's his poorest major, in fact, with just one quarterfinal appearance (he's made at least three at each of the other majors).

With Roger Federer his projected quarterfinal opponent, conserving energy and getting efficient wins is absolutely key for Nishikori. But his draw's not at all bad through the early rounds.
11:46 02 Jul

All-Aussie clash hotting up

Kyrgios trailed by a break, but got back on level terms as Thompson served for the set, and now it looks very much like we could be headed to a tie-break.

Kyrgios is chuntering away to spectators in his vicinity in between points (and sometimes serves), and just pulled off a spectacular dive volley, but couldn't break Thompson's serve at 5-5 - yet.
11:19 02 Jul

Royalty spotted!

And not the tennis kind ... A rare foray outside the Royal Box for the Duchess of Cambridge, who's sitting with Fed Cup captain Anne Keothavong and team member Katie Boulter to watch another of the Team GB squad, Harriet Dart (a good little player with a nice backhand, took a set from Karolina Pliskova last year).

Matches are live on day 2 of Wimbledon 2019!

We have grass, we have spectators, we have players in white, we have Jordan Thompson's moustache. Let's do this.

What's going on right now?

Well, on No. 2 Court Sloane Stephens is warming up against Timea Bacsinszky.

No. 3 Court has an all-Aussie clash between the aforementioned moustache and Nick Kyrgios (who will be more offensive?) with the winner likely to face Nadal.

Kei Nishikori is out on Court 12 - he's Roger Federer's potential quarterfinal opponent and facing Thiago Monteiro.

And there are more than a few Brits scattered about the place, including Harriet Dart, Dan Evans and James Ward

Order to be restored?

After the turmoil and revolution of day one, will day two see the ancien regime restoring order?

Wimbledon stalwarts Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams are all on the order of play and all very much expected to win their opening matches, while defending champion Angelique Kerber and new world no. 1 Ashleigh Barty start their campaigns.

Who's on upset alert?

- French Open finalist Dominic Thiem who is up against big-serving former semifinalist Sam Querrey

- Petra Kvitova, with the two-time champion tending to be vulnerable in early rounds and struggling with an arm injury; she's up against very talented Eastbourne semifinalist Ons Jabeur

- Sloane Stephens, who is super inconsistent and has a tough opponent in Timea Bacsinszky

- Marin Cilic, the 2017 finalist who's having a torrid year as he struggles with injury and is up against the very good Adrian Mannarino

Recap: Day 1

One thing to love about Wimbledon (among many): No messing about with playing the first round over three days. By the end of day one, a full quarter of the players who entered the singles are out.

And one day one of this particular Wimbledon, we lost some players we really might have expected to see more of.

Wimbledon 2019 live blog: Day two!

Welcome to the livetennis.com live blog for day 2 of Wimbledon 2019!

Matches are just under 30 minutes away and we'll be here with you from the first ball to the last, keeping you updated with live results, commentary and analysis.

(geo restrictions apply; funded account required or to have placed a bet in the last 24 hours to qualify)

What an opening day at Wimbledon it was, with the likes of Naomi Osaka, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas already eliminated. What does Day 2 have in store?

Immense star-power for one, with the King of Wimbledon - a certain Roger Federer - beginning his quest for a ninth title, while two-time champion Rafael Nadal is also in action.

On the women’s side, Angelique Kerber starts her title defence on Centre Court and World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty plays her first Grand Slam match as a top seed, while former champions Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova also launch their respective campaigns.

Serena will be trying to avoid the same fate as her sister when she comes up against qualifier Giulia Gatto-Monticone, who is playing her first Wimbledon main draw at the age of 31, while Kerber meets compatriot Tatjana Maria, who is a great player on grass having won the Mallorca title last year.

Both of those matches take place on Centre Court, which is a nice change of pace from the usual two men’s contests, with Federer’s opener against South Africa’s Lloyd Harris the other encounter. Federer’s last match at Wimbledon against a big-serving South African (Kevin Anderson) ended in defeat, but it would be one of the biggest upsets of all time if the Swiss were to fall in this one.

Barty, riding a 12-match winning streak from her title triumphs at Roland Garros and Birmingham, opens her campaign against Zheng Saisai on No. 1 Court, followed by home hope Johanna Konta vs Ana Bogden and Nadal vs Japanese qualifier Yuichi Sugita.

There’s plenty of other big names around the ground on the outside courts, including aforementioned former champions Sharapova (vs Pauline Parmentier), Muguruza (vs Beatriz Haddad Maia) and Kvitova (vs Ons Jabeur), while French Open runner-up Dominic Thiem (vs Sam Querrey) and 2017 Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic (vs Adrian Mannarino) are also in action.

It’s shaping as another wild and unpredictable day at The Championships - join us from around the grounds as we bring you all the latest live scores, results, breaking news and more!
