'She was making my job easy.'

Murray and Williams are talking to the BBC.

'We've really got this rhythm that we're starting to feel,' Williams said.

'She returned brilliant especially at the end of the first set, beginning of the second, just hitting clean winners, she was making my job easy,' Murray adds.
19:31 09 Jul

GSM Williams/Murray d. Atawo/Martin 7-5, 6-3

Andy Murray seals the match with an ace but it's Serena Williams who was, without question, the star player out there today! A stunning performance from Williams who is into the semifinals of the singles and the third round of the mixed doubles.

They will face top seeds Nicole Melichar and Bruno Soares tomorrow.
19:09 09 Jul

Murray/Williams break in second set

Just an unbelievable returning game from Serena Williams, assisted here and there by Murray, and they break Fabrice Martin's serve in a 9-minute game to lead 2-0!
18:45 09 Jul

SET Murrena lead 7-5

A Murray challenge proves Williams hit a big winner. You know what that is? Teamwork.

Set point for Murrena again at 5-6, 30-40 - and Murray nets a makeable forehand return. But Williams clocks another backhand return winner - Murray gets the return over the net and keeps the point alive until the ball pops to Williams, who hits a cross-court forehand winner!
18:35 09 Jul

Williams hits return winner off 138mph serve

As Martin serves at 4-5, Williams hits a clean return winner off an 138mph serve for set point - an unbelievable strike!

But Murray can't return a 123mph serve from the Frenchman to convert and the sixth seeds have game point, only for Martin to double-fault. Murrena can't get to break point again, however, and Martin/Atawo hold.
18:19 09 Jul

Murrena on serve at 4-4 - Martin's volleys exceptional so far

Pushed to 30-30 on William's serve at 3-3, Murrena go on the attack on Atawo's serve at 3-4.

A clean return winner from Murray and a double fault from Atawo take them to 15-30 and Murray finds space down the line for 15-40.

Martin cleans up a short ball off Atawo's serve deftly, and again smothers the net for deuce - and a reflex volley off Williams's full return, which is not easy. But they will have a third opportunity - and Murray's lob attempt drifts wide.

Martin/Atawo hold. Martin's volley reflexes and crosses have been exceptional so far.
17:57 09 Jul

Murrena hold to open (as Serena thumps Martin)

Andy Murray holds to secure the opening game for the team we will call Murrena, in deference to the wishes of the GOAT.

Williams pings Fabrice Martin (to be fair, he is quite a big target, being 6'7") and apologies.
17:55 09 Jul

Serena's cooldown routine

Think Serena Williams's match was tough?

Check out her cooldown routine:

17:31 09 Jul

Strycova: 'I think this was one of the best matches I played here.'

'It sounds crazy, but it's happening,' Strycova says. 'I'm extremely happy, but my voice is even shaking right now. I can't believe it. ... I felt like I was playing very well, but I felt like she was striking the ball very hard and very well, but I stick to my game plan and I try to mix it up and I

'Potentially, yes. I think this was one of the best matches I played here and especially, I haven't been playing on Centre Court, so I enjoyed this even more.'

On Serena: 'It's a match that I can't wait to play.'
17:25 09 Jul

GSM Strycova d. Konta 7-6(5), 6-1

Konta, her back against the wall, goes for broke with some big returns for 0-30, but Strycova pulls it back for 30-30. So much experience and steel in the Czech's thousand-yard stare across the net.

Match point Strycova as Konta's forehand once again breaks down ... and Strycova has done it!

She's into her first Grand Slam semifinal!
17:22 09 Jul

Strycova breaks again, will serve for match

Konta has game points for 2-4, but finds herself break point down instead, letting Strycova in with a forehand error and finding once more in this match that Strycova just will not stop coming for you.

Konta saves break point with an excellent volley that has Strycova once again hitting the deck as she tries to chase it down for deuce - but double-faults herself into trouble. It looks like she's saved herself with a great wide serve - but she puts the drive volley wild and wide!
17:17 09 Jul

Strycova leads 4-1 despite tumble

Good aggressive play from Konta to hold to 15 and get on the board in this second set but she looks really frustrated as yet again Strycova yanks her forward and she fumbles the ball long.

Up 30-0 at 3-1, Strycova takes a tumble, but comes up with a strong second serve for 40-15. A double-fault for 40-30 - but she holds as her backhand skips off the net cord and through the empty air between Konta's body and her racquet. More frustration for the British player.
17:08 09 Jul

Strycova leading 3-0 in the second set

The all-court craft of the Czech veteran continues to befuddle the more rigid and less adaptable Konta.
16:55 09 Jul

Strycova takes first set against Konta! 7-6 (5)

Not going according to plan for Konta and the home crowd, as the British No. 1 drives a forehand into the net on set point to concede the opening set.

She started so brightly, Konta, but Strycova kept chipping away, and the Czech has carved her way to a one-set lead.
16:49 09 Jul

Svitolina through to first Grand Slam semi-final!

It's been a long time coming, but she's finally done it!

Elina Svitolina moves into her first Grand Slam semi-final after a 7-5 6-4 victory over a brave Karolina Muchova.

Tense finish, with Muchova getting to 30-30 with another stunning diving volley, but Svitolina takes the next two points to confirm her spot in the last four.

Who would have though it would come at Wimbledon?

She will battle Simona Halep for a spot in the final!
16:47 09 Jul

Konta and Strycova into first set tie break...

16:45 09 Jul

Muchova holds to move within one game of Svitolina 5-7 4-5

Excellent hold, via deuce, sealed with more forecourt brilliance.

Win or lose, Karolina Muchova has won plenty of fans with her game, and her heart.

Svitolina will serve for the match for a second time...
16:38 09 Jul

Muchova gets one of the breaks back! 5-7 3-5

Did I say Muchova's resistance is broken? Please, pardon that nonsense...

The young Czech brings up break point with the most beautiful backhand down the line, and she gets the break when Svitolina makes a complete harsh of a backhand volley.

Svitolina has still got the insurance of an extra break, but remember, Karolina Pliskova twice served for the match against Muchova yesterday, but ended up losing...
16:35 09 Jul

Konta saves break point and holds for 5-4

Srycova is causing all sorts of problems with the variety oozing off her racket, but Konta just about keeps her poise to fend off break point, and hold for 5-4...

Strycova serving to stay in the set...
16:33 09 Jul

Svitolina breaks again, and will serve for a spot in the semis! 7-5 5-2

Svitolina has broken Muchova's resistance, and is coasting towards a maiden Grand Slam semi-final...
16:26 09 Jul

Svitolina breaks Muchova to lead 7-5 3-2

Svitolina trailed 2-0 in this second set, but she has turned it around brilliantly, winning three games in a row to lead 3-2, with the break...
16:22 09 Jul

Strycova breaks back against Konta 3-4

Konta's forehand drifts into the tramlines to give up break back point, and she sends a short backhand over the baseline, off an awkward Strycova return to lose the game, and her serve.

Back on serve on Centre Court..
16:12 09 Jul

Muchova 17/24 at the net in first set

Some numbers from that first set between Svitolina and Muchova, and the one that stands out for me is Muchova's 17/24 at the net. She's spending an awful lot of time in that forecourt, and it's lovely to watch.

Worth noting also that she won one more point than Svitolina...

Meanwhile, they are on serve in the second, with Muchova breaking, and Svitolina breaking back... 1-2, Svitolina to serve...
16:10 09 Jul

Strycova on the board against Konta 1-3

Johanna Konta raced out to a 3-0 lead, but Barbora Strycova has just held to love to get on the board.
16:05 09 Jul

Svitolina takes first set against Muchova 7-5

Quality set of tennis- a real treat to watch- and a fitting way to end, as Svitolina wins an exchange at the net to take the opener.

She has fought back from 2-5 to win the set 7-5.
16:00 09 Jul

Svitolina breaks and will serve for the first set at 6-5

A mammoth game, and it's Svitolina who comes through, converting her fifth break point of the game.

Muchova was charging the net like a maniac in that game, producing some absolutely sublime volleys and half volleys under immense pressure, but Svitolina kept plugging away, and got her reward...

The Ukrainian is serving for the set...
15:48 09 Jul

Konta on Centre...

The last of the four women's quarter finals is about to begin, with British No. 1, Johanna Konta squaring off against Czech, Barbora Strycova...

Konta was ranked out of the top 40 at the end of April, and appeared to be heading nowhere, but she found form in the unlikeliest of places, producing a sterling clay-court season to haul herself back into the top 20...

The Brit is continuing that resurgence at Wimbledon, and is looking to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2017...

Strycova is into her second Grand Slam quarter final- her first since she made the last eight at Wimbledon in 2014. Can the crafty Czech score an unpopular victory over the home favourite and move into her maiden major semi-final?
15:43 09 Jul

Svitolina breaks back! 4-5

She's a battler, Svitolina, and she strikes at the nick of time to prevent Muchova from closing out the first set.
15:36 09 Jul

Muchova leads Svitolina 5-2

Karolina Muchova, you beauty!

A deft half volley gets her to game point, and a beautifully placed first serve gets her another hold.

One game away from the opening set.

I have absolutely enjoyed watching her in the last few days...
15:31 09 Jul

Muchova with the early lead against Svitolina...

She's a wonderful all-court player, Muchova, and she is displaying all of her skills early on here...

The young Czech leads Svitolina 4-1...
15:17 09 Jul

Elina Svitolina vs Karolina Muchova live now...

WTA Finals champion, Elina Svitolina is on Court 1, taking on the talented Czech, Karolina Muchova...

It's a fifth major quarter final for Svitolina, and her first at Wimbledon. She is 0-4 in her previous quarter finals across the Australian Open and Roland Garros...

Muchova scored a sensational victory over Karolina Pliskova just yesterday, beating her more illustrious compatriot 4-6 7-5 13-11 in a three-hour marathon, but how much will she have left in the tank against an opponent who will make her work for every point...

It's a big opportunity for Svitolina to move into her first Grand Slam semi-final...
15:11 09 Jul

Serena Williams through to Wimbledon semi-finals! 6-4 4-6 6-3!

Serena starts with an ace, but she then double faults for 15-15...

She gets to 30-15 with a tremendous forehand cross court winner, and moves up to two match points when Riske can't clear the net with a forehand...

Match points...

Yep. You bet!

Sealed with an ace!

Fierce reaction, followed by a big smile.

The legendary American is into another Wimbledon semi-final, where she will play Johanna Konta or Barbora Strycova.
15:07 09 Jul

Serena breaks and is serving for a spot in the Wimbledon semi-finals! 6-4 4-6 5-3

Ooooh...

Riske pushes a sitter of a forehand long on the first point of the game, and Serena rifles a backhand down the line to get to 0-30...

Riske pulls it back to 15-30, but Serena bludgeons a forehand winner cross-court to set up two break points...

Riske sends down an excellent first serve to erase one of the break points; and that's not a bad second serve either- out wide, and drawing the error from Serena, deuce...

Serena guides a backhand into the open court for another break point, but Riske saves again with a fine second serve and a sneaky move forward

Gasps on Centre Court as Serena slips awkwardly- Riske taking advantage to bring up game point- but Serena gets up a pulls it back to deuce with a lovely drop shot-winner combination...

Wonderful anticipation from Serena at the net helps her to another break point, and the pressure pays off as Riske sends down a double fault to concede her serve.

Williams will serve for the match. Next.
14:58 09 Jul

Serena holds to move ahead 4-3

A strong hold to love from Serena, accompanied by some vehement 'Come ons'

Decibels rising from the great American, as she attempts to push herself into the Wimbledon semi-finals.
14:55 09 Jul

Serena vs Riske 6-4 4-6 3-3

Parity on the scoreboard as Riske sends a backhand winner down the line to hold via deuce.
14:50 09 Jul

Riske breaks back! 2-3

Wow! Don't ever write off this woman, Alison Riske, as she puts away a short backhand winner to get back on serve.

Serena had a 40-15 lead in that service game...
14:46 09 Jul

Serena breaks to lead 3-1 in the final set!

Serena produces a tremendous angled forehand to open up the court for a forehand down the line- that gives her break point, but she mistimes a forehand into the tramlines for deuce...

She gets another break point when Riske nets a forehand, and the break is confirmed with a Riske double fault!

Daylight for Serena- can she march on from here?
14:39 09 Jul

Serena holds to move ahead in the deciding set! 6-4 4-6 2-1

Emphatic hold from Serena, who powers down consecutive aces to seal another hold.

More roaring from the great woman...
14:38 09 Jul

Williams breaks right back on Centre Court

Riske coughs up break point with a double fault, and Serena accepts the invitation, powering a forehand return winner beyond her compatriot.

Excellent riposte by the seven-time champ!
14:36 09 Jul

Halep into second Wimbledon semi-final

Simona Halep had early trouble against Shuai Zhang, trailing 1-4, but she has charged over the finish line on Court 1 to book her spot in the Wimbledon semis for the second time in her career- and a first since 2014.
14:33 09 Jul

Riske breaks to open the deciding set! 4-6 6-4 1-0

Riske produces a backhand return winner to get to 15-40, and a forehand drive volley earns her the break!

Serena with plenty of work to do...
14:28 09 Jul

Riske takes second set against Serena! 4-6 6-4!

Riske takes the crucial opening point with a crisp backhand winner, and she quickly races to 40-0 after Serena nets a couple of groundstrokes.

Three set points, and she needs only one as Williams drives a backhand return well beyond the baseline!

Going the distance, and we shouldn't be surprised, should we?

Riske has gone three in all of her matches at Wimbledon 2019.
14:26 09 Jul

Riske breaks, and will serve for the second set! 4-6 5-4

Brilliant from Riske!

She guides a forehand down the line to bring up the first break point of the set, and she gets the break with a deft half volley. Brave venture to the net. Super stuff.

Can she close out the second set?
14:20 09 Jul

Halep and Zhang on serve in the second set 7-6 2-1

Three games gone in the second set between Halep and Zhang, and it's Halep with the 2-1 lead, on serve. No break points yet in this second set...
14:14 09 Jul

Serena holds and leads 6-4 4-3

Serena hooks a forehand cross-court winner to open the game, and quickly motors to 40-0.

Riske isn't giving up this game yet. She drives a backhand winner down the line, and then a forehand down the line to get to 40-30. Make that deuce as Serena nets a backhand.

Serena responds with an ace to bring up game point, but we are back at deuce as the legendary American sends down her first double fault of the match.

Williams gets another game point with a backhand winner, accompanied by another loud roar, and she wriggles over the line via a successful hawk eye challenge.

A battling hold from the seven-time champion puts her two games away from victory.
14:12 09 Jul

Serena and Riske neck-and-neck in the second set 6-4 3-3

No break points yet in the second set as we enter the decisive phase...

Can Serena close this out in two? Or will three-set queen Riske force yet another decider at Wimbledon 2019?
14:07 09 Jul

Halep takes first set against Riske 7-6 (4)

Halep got an early lead in the breaker, and she largely controlled things from there.

She brings up set point when Zhang's forehand floats wide, and she seals the set with a fine inside-in forehand.

Tough set, but the Romanian has fought back from a break down to take the lead. She's one set away from a second Wimbledon semi-final...
14:03 09 Jul

Serena leads Riske 6-4 2-1

Tough service game for Serena, but the legendary American comes through with a roar.
13:59 09 Jul

Halep and Zhang into first set tie break

Zhang is two points away from the set at 30-30. but a couple of errors from the Chinese help Halep over the line.

We'll have a breaker...
13:54 09 Jul

Zhang holds to love to lead 6-5

Can Halep take this to a tie-break? That was a very, very confident and competent hold from Zhang.
13:49 09 Jul

Halep levels at 5-5

Zhang held to lead 5-4 after an exceptional all-court point, leaving Halep serving to stay in it.

It feels like Halep is playing this match much more on her terms (i.e. long rallies) as the set goes on - which is not to say that she'll win them all, but she does frustrate Zhang into missing a backhand wide after a lengthy one for 30-15 and plays two good points for 5-5.
13:45 09 Jul

SET Williams leads Riske 6-4

Two set points for Williams now as Riske nets a backhand.

The first goes begging as Williams nets a makeable forehand return, but she breaks to take the set as a testing return gets a high volley error from Riske! Williams lifts her fist high - that was a fight and a half.
13:42 09 Jul

Halep back on serve for 3-4

At 1-4, Halep won an absolute marathon multiple-deuce game to stay just one break down - and she celebrates by breaking Zhang, cracking a clean return winner to set up break point and converting when Zhang double faults.
13:38 09 Jul

Williams breaks back for 4-4

Williams strikes her own backhand return winner for 15-40 and although Riske staves off one break point, she can't fend off another and it's back on serve.
13:35 09 Jul

Riske breaks to lead 4-3

Well, that I wasn't expecting - Riske breaks Williams once more with a clean, sharp-angled backhand return winner off a second serve. How will Williams deal with this unexpected resistance?

Williams breaks back for 3-3

Williams attacks the net and lands a backhand volley for 0-15, then a clean return winner for 0-30 - looked like she had all the time in the world to hit it and Riske, while being quite close to it, was never going to get there. Welcome to the party, Al.

Riske double-faults for 0-40, but Williams just overpresses on a backhand return for 15-40, and then misses when stretched out wide to the forehand for 30-40 - and then Riske lands a clean backhand down the line for deuce. Nice.

Williams sets up a fourth break point as she forces a backhand error from Riske, however, and converts - a lucky net cord helped, but Riske still scrambled it down and Williams had to make a deft volley into the open court.

13:24 09 Jul

Halep on the board but Zhang up 4-1

Halep has got on the board, holding from 15-30 to trail 1-3, and now she manages to pull Zhang into a baseline exchange which ends with the Chinese player putting the ball in the net as Zhang serves at 30-15, but two good serves from Zhang see her pull ahead 4-1.
13:22 09 Jul

Riske consolidates the break to lead 3-1

Serving to consolidate, Riske goes up 30-15 but can't find a first serve and Williams pounces, stepping in for a big (but measured) return and following it with a clean forehand winner for 30-30.

A smart serve from Riske elicits a short ball she can clean up on the forehand drive for game point, and she gets a fortunate net-cord to hold.
13:20 09 Jul

Zhang leads Halep 3-0

Both of the seeds are in trouble actually as Halep trails Zhang 0-3 - again, it's deep, very flat hitting which is doing the trick, working Halep from side to side for errors.
13:14 09 Jul

Riske breaks to lead 2-1

After holding serve, Williams is quickly up 15-30 on Riske's serve with a clean forehand winner after her return got the 29-year-old off-balance.

Strong serving from Riske sees her on the board for 1-1, though.

At 1-1, 15-0, the two get into their first rally and Riske displays some of the same flat hitting which was so effective against Barty. Williams stumbles on to her back foot (it was a bad bounce, as well) before landing a big serve for 30-15, but Riske hits a backhand down the line winner for 30-30.

Williams serves what is already her third ace for game point, but her backhand shades long in a baseline exchange - so far, whenever the point goes longer than a couple of shots, it's going Riske's way - for deuce. And Riske has her first break point as Williams misses long off a deep Riske return - again, something that wreaked havoc on Barty - and a deep second-serve return gets Riske the break!

Tough one for Halep vs Zhang?

Over on No. 1, it's Simona Halep taking on Zhang Shuai.

Zhang, who has beaten Carolines Garcia and Wozniacki at this tournament, has never been to a Grand Slam semifinal - she lost her only previous major quarterfinal to Johanna Konta at the 2016 Australian Open - but she does lead the head-to-head with Halep 2-1, having won their last two encounters in straights.

Players on court - let's go!

Out on Centre Court, we have queen Serena Williams, playing her 14th Wimbledon quarterfinal and facing Alison Riske for the first time.

This is Riske's first major quarterfinal but she is 14-1 on grass so far this year and was utterly brilliant to beat Ash Barty in the fourth round.

But only two women have ever beaten Williams in a Wimbledon quarterfinal - Jennifer Capriati and Justine Henin - and the most recent occasion was in 2008. That's a seven-match winning streak for Williams.

News on a former champion

Garbine Muguruza has finally split with coach Sam Sumyk after four years - something many tennis fans have been begging her to do for some time.

Muguruza and Sumyk started working together in 2015 and the Spanish player went on to win the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017, briefly rising to world no. 1.

However Muguruza's results and game have gone into decline since then. Since the start of 2018 she has only won two titles (both International-level in Monterrey) and she hasn't made it to the quarterfinals of a major in over a year. She lost in the first round of Wimbledon this year to Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil.

'Thanks for the lesson'

A word on the men's side of things.

If there was a way to sum up Manic Monday on the men's side, it would be Matteo Berrettini's words to Roger Federer at the net after getting five games from him in a straight-set defeat: 'Thanks for the tennis lesson, how much do I owe you?'

Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic all absolutely crushed their opponents and are more overwhelming favourites than ever, given the other five men who have made the quarterfinals, only one of whom, Kei Nishikori, has made a Grand Slam final before (once, five years ago).

Wimbledon 2019 live blog: Day eight!

Welcome to the live blog for second Tuesday at The Championships, aka Wimbledon day 8, aka Ladies' Quarterfinal Day!

After Manic Monday definitively and, in some cases, brutally separated the challengers from the contenders, the remaining eight men and women are each just three matches - six sets, in the case of today's quarterfinal competitors - away from that coveted trophy.

This just got very, very real.

(geo restrictions apply; funded account required or to have placed a bet in the last 24 hours to qualify)

All of the top six seeds are gone, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t in for some spellbinding women’s quarter-finals at Wimbledon today. Quite the contrary in fact, with so much depth in women’s tennis meaning half of the quarter-finalists are unseeded and quite capable of posting upsets.

Leading the unseeded pack is the giant-killing and grass-loving Alison Riske, who will be trying to back up her big win over World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty against seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams. Riske, who won two tournaments on grass in the lead-up to Wimbledon, has been the comeback queen at the All England Club, recovering from a set down to defeat Donna Vekic, Belinda Bencic and Barty, all of whom are excellent grass-courters like herself.

Riske played the perfect match against Barty and will be hoping to bring similar tennis to the table against Serena, who by contrast, cruised into the quarter-finals with a 6-2 6-2 win over Carla Suarez Navarro. Serena is most definitely the favourite, but she’s played two qualifiers - who she struggled with - and two players she matches up perfectly against and always beats. Is there a chance for Riske to spring a surprise in her maiden major quarter-final?

Following that Centre Court showdown, Johanna Konta looks to reach a second Wimbledon semi-final as she’s cheered on by her home fans against the unseeded Barbora Strycova, who’s playing her second Grand Slam quarter-final at 33 years of age. Konta is fresh from earning back-to-back wins over top 10 players for the first time after conquering Sloane Stephens and Petra Kvitova, while Strycova has intelligently serve-and-volleyed her way to the last eight, coming back from a set down to beat Elise Mertens on Manic Monday. It’s a great chance for both players to make a Grand Slam semi-final - can Konta handle the pressure and expectation again?

Simona Halep and Zhang Shuai launch the action on No. 1 Court, with the Romanian the highest seed left in the draw at No. 7. Halep has flown under the radar at Wimbledon but is trucking along nicely, beating Victoria Azarenka and ending the run of 15-year-old Cori Gauff in straight sets - but she doesn’t have good memories of facing Zhang, with the Chinese player winning their last two meetings in straight sets, including a memorable R1 triumph at the 2016 Australian Open - th tournament where Zhang made her only previous Grand Slam quarter-final.

Meanwhile, we are guaranteed a first-time Grand Slam semi-finalist in the fourth quarter-final as Elina Svitolina comes up against Karolina Muchova. After dealing with a lot of injury issues and playing on her worst surface, it’s ironic that Svitolina’s best chance to make a first major semi-final is coming at Wimbledon, but after being on the brink of elimination against Margarita Gasparyan in the second round before the Russian had to retire with cramp, she will start favourite against the unseeded but supremely talented and rising Muchova, who is coming off an epic 13-11 in the decider victory over Eastbourne champion and third seed Karolina Pliskova.

There’s plenty of other action to look forward to as well! Andy Murray and Serena Williams will team up for their second round mixed doubles encounter on Centre Court against 14th seeds Fabrice Martin and Raquel Atawo, while the men’s and women’s doubles quarter-finals take place, along with the rest of the mixed doubles and juniors and legends tournaments.

It will of course be another unmissable day of tennis from Wimbledon - join us from around the grounds from first point to last as we bring you all the latest live scores, results, breaking news and more!
