The second round matches in the Hobart International will be played on Wednesday, with Kiki Bertens, Johanna Larsson and Lucie Safarova heading the draw for the day.
Bertens, who has been awarded the top seed in the tournament, started her bid against the German Annika Beck. The world no. 22 won that match comfortably 6-1, 6-2, with the help of five aces. Her first serve win rate was at 85 percent, which was quite impressive from the Dutch.
She will now face the Kazakh Galina Voskoboeva, whom she'll be meeting for the first time on the tour. Between the two players, Bertens had a much better season last year and appears to be in a better form. She'll start as the favourite.
Next up is Johanna Larsson, who will be going up against the Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko. The two players have met thrice on the tour, and the Swede leads 3-0. However, all those victories came more than four years ago.
Tsurenko was seen struggling quite often with the injuries last season. She pulled out of many tournaments owing to fitness concerns, and it'll be intriguing to see if she has managed to overcome all of them. Larsson too, had an average year and hasn't been in that great of a form. This is definitely anyone's match to win.
Coming to Safarova, she will be facing the 22 year old Japanese Risa Ozaki. The Czech is considerably more experienced than the world no. 100, but Safarova's poor form in the previous season has certainly been troublesome for her. She last played in the WTA Auckland, where she lost to Barbora Strycova in the second round.
As for Ozaki, she got a ticket to the main draw after winning the qualifiers. The young Japanese has been working quite hard on the tour, and winning here would certainly boost her confidence. However, being a Grand Slam runner-up, Safarova will be keen on repeating those feats. She should be able to win this one in straight sets.
