WTA Hobart 2017 order of play for Monday, January 9 - Bertens, Mladenovic to take to court on Monday

Suneer Chowdhary in News 8 Jan 2017
Kiki Bertens will take to court on Monday.

The 2017 edition of the Hobart International begins on Monday. The action on the day will be highlighted by Kiki Bertens, Kristina Mladenovic and Sara Errani.

Bertens has been seeded first for the tournament, who rose to prominence last season. After reaching her career best singles ranking of 21, she ended the year at just a spot below. However, she began her 2017 year on a gloomy note by losing in the first round of WTA Auckland.

In Hobart, she'll be going up against Annika Beck - a player against whom Bertens leads 5-0 in the head to head tally. Last year, they met twice and the young Dutch won on both the occasions in straight sets. This time around too, she should be able to repeat the same feat.

Beck lost her opening match in Auckland to Naomi Osaka and has been struggling with her form a lot, as seen in the previous season.

Coming to Mladenovic, she last played in Perth, where she was the runner-up. Having begun the year on a great note, she'll be eager to carry on this momentum forward. Her opponent for the day is the 21 year old Elise Mertens, who just made it to the main round after winning in the qualifiers.

Head to head speaking, Mladenovic leads 1-0, and they last met in 2016 WTA 's-Hertogenbosch. It was an easy win for Mladenovic then and she should be able to repeat the same feat again, given her present form.

Lastly, there's Sara Errani, who has been seeded 10th for the tournament. She'll be going up against the Japanese Risa Ozaki. Both the ladies are meeting each other for the first time on the tour. Errani began her year in Brisbane, where she lost her first round bout to Christina McHale.

As for Osaki, she lost in the qualifiers of WTA Shenzhen, but managed to make it to the main draw in Hobart. This will be an intriguing game to see, with this being a classic one of young guns versus the experienced players.
