The first five players for Team Europe at the 2019 Laver Cup have been confirmed, with Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and Fabio Fognini the latest names to be confirmed.

Zverev, Thiem and Fognini join Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on Team Europe, captained by Bjorn Borg once again.

The 2019 edition of the Laver Cup will take place from 20-22 September at the Palexpo in Geneva after its first two editions took place in Prague and Chicago. Team Europe won both.

World no. 5 Alexander Zverev will be representing Team Europe for the third time, and has a 4-0 record in Laver Cup singles, scoring victories over Sam Querrey and Denis Shapovalov in Prague and John Isner in Kevin Anderson in Chicago.

'Laver Cup is one of the most fun weeks of my year,' Zverev said.

'Winning in Prague and Chicago as part of Team Europe has been unbelievable, there’s a team spirit and team atmosphere that’s unlike any other. I can’t wait to get together again and defend our title.'

World no. 4 Dominic Thiem rejoins Team Europe after missing the event in 2018. The Austrian, who recently made the French Open final for the second straight year, played the inaugural Laver Cup in Prague in 2017, scoring a singles win over Isner, but did not play in 2018.

Fabio Fognini will be making his Laver Cup debut. The 32-year-old Italian recently broke into the top 10 for the first time after winning his inaugural Masters 1000 Series title at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, beating 11-time champion Nadal in the semifinals.

'I’m very excited to be playing the Laver Cup in September,' Fognini said.

'Playing as part of a team is special in tennis, where we are more used to having a one-on-one battle every match. I’m looking forward to competing alongside all the great players on Team Europe.'

Zverev, Thiem and Fognini join Federer, whose management company co-owns the event and who has played in both editions thus far, and Nadal, who appeared at the inaugural Laver Cup in Prague but did not play the Chicago edition in 2018.

World no. 1 Novak Djokovic, who played Laver Cup in 2018, world no. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas and world no. 9 Karen Khachanov are the top-10 players not currently scheduled to appear for Team Europe.

Team Europe captain Borg still has a 'captain's pick' player to name.

John McEnroe has not yet announced the names of any players who will represent Team World in 2019, although it will clearly, once again, be nowhere near as strong a team as Team Europe, who can boast four of the world's top five players and five of the top 10. Team World could theoretically feature two players currently ranked in the top 10 - world no. 7 Kei Nishikori and world no. 8 Kevin Anderson.

John Isner, Jack Sock, Frances Tiafoe and Nick Kyrgios have all played both previous editions of the Laver Cup for Team World, with Sam Querrey and Denis Shapovalov featuring in 2017 and Anderson and Diego Schwartzman playing in 2018.

It was announced in May that the exhibition event has become an official part of the ATP Tour calendar, with the ATP Tour now including results from Laver Cup matches in player head-to-heads.
