ATP Gstaad Draw Preview, Predictions and Live Stream: David Goffin and Roberto-Bautista Agut lead the field in Gstaad

Leye Aduloju in ATP Tour 24 Jul 2017
  • The J.Safra Sarasin Swiss Open Gstaad is live from Gstaad from 24-30 July.
  • David Goffin plays his second tournament since returning from an ankle injury

David Goffin continues his comeback from the ankle injury he sustained at Roland Garros to lead the Gstaad field, which also includes defending champion, Feliciano Lopez.

Also in the draw are Alexandr Dolgopolov and Paolo Lorenzi, who were both beaten finalists in Bastad and Umag respectively, while Roberto Bautista-Agut and Ernests Gulbis also take their place in a decent looking field. Who will make it to the deep end of the field?

We preview the Gstaad draw.

FIRST QUARTER
Projected Quarter Final: David Goffin (1) vs Robin Haase (6)
David Goffin continues his comeback from ankle injury in Gstaad, where he has a bye into the second round. The top seed, who reached the quarter finals in his comeback meet in Umag last week, will open against either Mikhail Youzhny or Radu Albot. Goffin is seeded to meet Robin Haase in the quarter finals, but the Dutchman has a difficult route to the last eight. Haase begins against Argentine, Renzo Olivo, before a second round meeting with either Alexandr Dolgopolov or Thiago Monteiro. The clever money will be on Dolgopolov to come through that section, given the form the Ukrainian showed in reaching the final in Bastad last week.

Predicted Quarter Final: David Goffin vs Alexandr Dolgopolov

SECOND QUARTER
Projected Quarter Final: Feliciano Lopez (3) vs Joao Sousa (8)
Defending Gstaad champion, Feliciano Lopez returns to action this week, as he looks to transfer his superb form on grass on to the clay of Gstaad (His grass court season was brought to a premature conclusion by a foot injury in the opening round at Wimbledon). Lopez has got a pretty useful section of the draw to work with. The left-hander has a bye into the second round, and he will fancy a second round contest with either Facundo Bagnis or Yannick Hanfmann.

Should the seedings hold, Lopez will play Portuguese, Joao Sousa in the quarter finals, but Sousa is on a terrible patch at the moment, having lost his last six matches. If Sousa breaks his losing streak against Santiago Giraldo in the opening round in Gstaad, his tournament will likely end against either Thomaz Bellucci or Swiss, Henri Laaksonen. Two-time champion, Bellucci is a very experienced clay courter, and should get through that opener against Laaksonen, but the Swiss will be high on confidence having made his first ATP quarter final last week in Bastad. He held match points in that match against Ferrer too.

Predicted Quarter Final: Feliciano Lopez vs Thomaz Bellucci

THIRD QUARTER
Projected Quarter Final: Fabio Fognini vs Paolo Lorenzi
Fabio Fognini remains one of the most unpredictable players on the tour, but looks good for at least a quarter final in Gstaad, given this draw. The Italian has a bye into the second round, where he will play either Taro Daniel or Norbert Gombos. The other side of this quarter is a lot more complicated. The seedings say Umag finalist, Paolo Lorenzi should go through- he opens against Marco Chiudinelli, and could run into Ernests Gulbis in the second round. Not that Gulbis is the most reliable player around, but if he is in the mood, he can easily get through this little section of the draw.

Predicted Quarter Final: Fabio Fognini vs Ernests Gulbis

FOURTH QUARTER:
Projected Quarter Final: Roberto Bautista-Agut vs Dusan Lajovic
Roberto Bautista-Agut’s route to the quarter finals is about as straight forward as it gets- on paper at least. The Spanish second seed has a bye into the second round, and starts against French qualifier, Gleb Sakharov or Swiss wildcard, Antoine Bellier.
Bautista-Agut is projected to meet Dusan Lajovic in the last eight, but Lajovic has got a very tricky customer in Dustin Brown in the opening round, before a possible second round encounter with Denis Istomin.

Predicted Quarter Final: Roberto Bautista-Agut vs Dustin Brown

The J.Safra Sarasin Swiss Open Gstaad is live from Gstaad from 24-30 July.
