Controversial Australian rising star Nick Kyrgios returns to action this week as he headlines the opening day’s action at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur.

Kyrgios has endured a turbulent last couple of months on tour where he has been surrounded by endless controversy. Most recently he was bundled out in the first round of the US Open to Andy Murray and was subsequently overlooked for Australia’s Davis Cup semi-final against Great Britain in Glasgow.

Often struggling to lift for the smaller ATP 250 events, this tournament in Kuala Lumpur presents Kyrgios with perhaps his best chance yet to lift a maiden ATP title.

With his mother born in Malaysia, Kyrgios will experience a home-crowd type support from the Kuala Lumpur crowd, and that could be enough motivation for the 20-year-old to put his best foot forward for this event.

Standing in his way first up is unseeded Columbian Santiago Giraldo. The pair have played once before on tour, with Kyrgios coming away with a straight sets victory at the Canadian Masters last year.

Kyrgios’ compatriot Sam Groth is also in action in the only other main draw clash on Monday when he takes on German Benjamin Becker.

Becker is coming into this encounter on the back of a five-match losing streak at tour level, although he did post a win in Davis Cup action a fortnight ago, albeit against world No. 928 Roberto Cid of the Dominican Republic.

In other action on Day 1, the final round of qualifying takes place, while a local Malaysian doubles team will look to take advantage of their wildcard status in a first round doubles contest.
