Former world No. 4, Tomas Berdych begins his campaign at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier on Tuesday when he takes on German qualifier, Matthias Bachinger.

Berdych is back in Montpellier for the first time since he won the title in 2012, when he defeated Gael Monfils in the final. The Czech has had a surprisingly good start to the season, considering the troubles he had last year, amassing a fine 7-2 record to start 2019.

Berdych missed the final six months of last season due to a back complaint, but he returned the tour in Doha in the opening week of 2019, and made it all the way to the final, beating Philipp Kohlschreiber, Fernando Verdasco, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Marco Cecchinato before losing to Roberto Bautista-Agut. The 33-year-old continued his fine form at the Australian Open, taking down seeded players, Kyle Edmund and Diego Schwartzman, as well as Robin Haase, all in straight sets before losing to Rafael Nadal, quite handily, in the Round of 16.

A former Wimbledon finalist, Berdych finished inside the top-ten for seven consecutive years between 2010 and 2016, but he has undergone a decline in the last couple of seasons, accentuated by the back injury that forced him out of the top 70 by the end of 2018. Berdych climbed as high as 57th in the world after his Doha run, but he enters Montpellier at 79th, seeking his 14th career title, and a first since October 2016, when he won in Shenzhen.

Bachinger is making his first tour-level main draw appearance of the season, after failing to qualify for Doha and the Australian Open. The 31-year-old has finally got through the qualifying hurdle in Montpellier, beating Frenchman, Jonathan Eysseric and Belgian, Ruben Bemelmans to get into the main draw. Prior to Montpellier, he played a Challenger tournament in Quimper, where he made the quarter finals.

Bachinger enjoyed the finest moment of his career towards the end of last season in Metz, when he reached his first tour-level final, stunning Kei Nishikori in the semis before falling to Gilles Simon. The German had won just one tour-level match all season prior to Metz, but he rose through the qualifying rounds before stringing together four main draws en route the final. He didn't do much else of great significance last season, with his only other results of note being a Challenger final in Mallorca, and a semi-final in Bratislava at the end of the year.

The 31-year-old reached a career-high ranking of 85th in 2011, but he has been outside the top 100 since the middle of 2012, and dipped as low as 574th in 2016 after undergoing knee surgery in January of that year. Can the world No. 142 stun Berdych in Montpellier?

They have met once before, in the semi-finals in Stockholm in 2014, when Berdych eked out a 7-6 6-4 victory, and given their respective starts to the season, and the obvious greater quality Berdych possesses, the powerful Czech should move past the German in Tuesday's meeting.

Tomas Berdych vs Matthias Bachinger is live from Montpellier on Tuesday, 5 February from 3:30pm local time/ 2:30pm GMT
