Matteo Berrettini made history for his country as he capped an ‘unbelievable’ season with a maiden victory at the Nitto ATP Finals, defeating Dominic Thiem in straight sets on Thursday.

Berrettini became the first Italian to win a singles match at the season-ending championships after earning a strong 7-6(3) 6-3 victory over Thiem, who had toppled Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in his first two Group Bjorn Borg matches.

The 23-year-old was dominant on serve, winning 47 out of 59 points behind his own delivery, while he also fired 30 winners to just 21 unforced errors to end his breakout season on a winning note.

”I’m really proud of myself, but more for my team, my family, my friends. It’s been an unbelievable season,” Berrettini said. “I didn’t expect to be here at the beginning of the season. I hope to come back here next year.”

Berrettini was ranked outside the top 50 to begin the 2019 season and had won just 19 tour-level matches in his career, but he put together an incredible year to end it inside the top 10.

The Italian won a total of 43 matches this season, including capturing two ATP titles in Budapest and Stuttgart, while he also made milestone first Grand Slam and Masters 1000 semi-finals at the U.S. Open and Shanghai respectively.

Berrettini also claimed six top 10 scalps and became just the fourth Italian in history to break into the top 10 himself.

Unlucky to be drawn into the same group as Federer and Djokovic, Berrettini said he learned a lot from his week in London - especially with his unlikely qualification to the season-ending championships, that saw him in 17th place in the Race during the U.S. Open.

“It was a great week,” Berrettini said. “Before the week started, my team, we talked a little bit and we said to each other, ‘Let's enjoy this week.’
“Being here wasn't a goal at the beginning of the year. Also before the US Open, I didn't expect that. I wasn't thinking about that,” Berrettini said. “I knew that I was playing good in springtime, like [during the] clay season. It's just crazy that it happened… I’m happy.”
