Matteo Berrettini continues his quest for the St. Petersburg title when he takes on Belarusian qualifier, Egor Gerasimov in the quarter finals on Friday.

(geo restrictions apply; funded account required or to have placed a bet in the last 24 hours to qualify)

Fresh off a brilliant semi-final run at the US Open, Berrettini made an excellent start to his St. Petersburg campaign, brushing aside Spaniard, Roberto Carballes Baena 6-1 6-2 in less than an hour.

The Italian powered down five aces against Carballes Baena, dropping just six points on serve, and facing no break points all through the contest. He was all over Carballes Baena's serve, winning half of the points on the Spaniard's first serve, and limiting him to 48% on his second serves. The US Open semi-finalist was also ruthless on break points, converting four of his five chances in a dominant performance.

It has been a terrific season for Berrettini, and that's not just because of his US Open exploits. The 23-year-old has already picked up two titles this year, winning on the clay of Budapest and the grass of Stuttgart just to show off his versatility. He also reached the final in Munich, and made semi-finals in Sofia and Halle.

Berrettini was ranked just outside the top-50 at the start of the year, but his 2019 efforts have pushed him to the brink of the top ten, with the Italian entering St. Petersburg as the 13th ranked player in the world. He is right in the mix for a sensational qualification for the Nitto ATP Finals, as he is currently ranked eighth (the final qualifying spot) in the live Race to London.

While that might not be top priority for Berrettini at the moment, it must surely be an exciting possibility, and he's got a good chance of taking another step forward when he plays Gerasimov in the St. Petersburg quarter finals on Friday.

Qualifier, Gerasimov is yet to drop a set in the St. Petersburg main draw, beating Lukas Rosol 6-0 6-4, and Adrian Mannarino 6-3 6-1 to win take his place in his first tour-level quarter final of the season.

Gerasimov's only previous tour-level main draw victories in 2019 before St. Petersburg were in Dubai, where he defeated Robin Haase and lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas, and at the US Open, where he took out Lloyd Harris before losing to Diego Schwartzman in the second round, but he has put together two very fine wins in St. Petersburg to reach his third tour-level quarter final. He has never scaled the last eight at any ATP Tour event.

Gerasimov's two previous quarter finals were recorded last year, in Los Cabos and Moscow, in his first notable moves on the main tour, but it has taken him some time to return to this stage in 2019. The 26-year-old failed to get through qualifying in most of the tournaments he entered, and the very few times he succeeded, he made little or no impact on the main draw, until St. Petersburg.

While he struggled on the tour, he kept things ticking with some good showings in the Challengers, winning the Recanati title, and making semi-finals in Shymkent and Aptos. Gerasimov has never broken into the top-100, but he has attained a career-high ranking of No. 119 this season, which also happens to be his current ranking. He will definitely better that by virtue of this week's results, and could get through that top 100 barrier if he upsets Berrettini in their first ever meeting on Friday.

His chances of doing that are not very great, as Berrettini has got straight back to business after his short post US Open break. The world No. 13 should be too powerful for the Belarusian qualifier on Friday.
