Hyeon Chung seeks his first ATP World Tour semi-final since May when he takes on Italian second seed, Fabio Fognini in Stockholm on Friday.

It has been a solid week for Chung, who has not faced a single break point in dominant victories over Americans, Taylor Fritz and Denis Kudla. He dropped just eight points on serve, and broke serve four times in a superb 6-2 6-2 victory over Fritz, while he was equally untroubled in the second round against Kudla, winning well over 50% of points on his first and second serves.

The Korean, who made such a bright start to the year, is contesting just his third quarter final in ten tournaments, having struggled to recreate his early-season form since his return from ankle injury.

The reigning Next Gen ATP Finals champion made a storming start to the year, reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open after a marquee victory over Novak Djokovic in the fourth round. The 22-year-old reached at least the quarter finals in seven straight tournaments between Auckland in January and Munich in May, including the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami, but he was cruelly held back by an ankle problem, which forced him out of action for almost three months. He missed a big chunk of the clay-court season, including Roland Garros, and sat out the entirety of the grass-court swing.

Chung was back on the tour at the end of July for the Atlanta Open, but he struggled for results through his time in North American and Asia, winning back-to-back matches just once in that period, in Winston-Salem.

However, he has found more success on the indoor hard courts of Stockholm, playing the sort of tennis that lifted him into the top 20 to advance to the quarter finals.

He faces his biggest test yet on Friday, as he takes on the mercurial Italian, Fabio Fognini.

The 31-year-old has already claimed three titles this year, in Sao Paolo, Bastad and Los Cabos, while he was runner-up in Chengdu, and a semi-finalist in Sydney, Rio, Geneva and Beijing. He also made the fourth round at the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

Fognini is playing his first tournament since Beijing, where an ankle injury forced him to pull out of a semi-final meeting with Juan Martin del Potro. He had a first round bye in Stockholm, but made a winning return to the tour in Stockholm, defeating Lukas Lacko 6-4 6-4 to move to the quarter finals.

After an exchange of breaks in the opening two games of the match, Fognini took control with another break for a 3-2 lead. He had to save two break points while he served for the set, but eventually closed it out on his first set point. The world No. 14 got the only break of the second set in the third game, and went on to close out the win on his third match point after an hour and a half.

Fognini moves on to play Hyeon Chung in Friday's quarter finals in the first meeting between the two players.

There should be plenty of eye-catching rallies in this one as both men move extremely well. Fognini is the more aesthetic of the two, but Chung is the more solid from the back of the court. Fognini's ankle will certainly be put under severe examination on Friday.

When Chung is at his best, he hardly gives anything away. The Korean has been in excellent form this week, and I reckon he'll be too strong for Fognini on Friday.
