  • Goffin has a perfect 3-0 record against Haase

Top seed, David Goffin faces a difficult test in the Gstaad quarter finals on Friday, as he confronts two-time finalist, Robin Haase.

Goffin is still working his way back to full match fitness following an ankle injury picked up at Roland Garros, a problem that forced him to sit out the entire grass court season.

The Belgian, who had been one of the form players on clay before his unfortunate injury, reached the quarter finals in his comeback event last week in Umag, defeating Hungarian Attila Balazs in the opening round before falling to Ivan Dodig in the last eight. Goffin was hardly convincing in Umag, and he certainly wasn’t convincing in his opening match in Gstaad, fending off four match points in a three-set escape against Moldovan, Radu Albot.

The world number 13 dropped his serve twice as he lost the opening set 6-2; he took the second set on a tie break, after failing to serve out the set at 5-4, setting up a dramatic final set. Albot jumped to the verge of victory when he established a 6-3 lead in the final set tie break, but Goffin refused to yield, saving all three match points, and another at 7-6 before claiming back-to-back points to complete a get-out-of-jail victory.

Goffin will take plenty of confidence from the way he battled, but not necessarily from the way he played, and he will need to up his level when he steps up against Dutchman Haase on Friday.

Goffin is seeking his fourth semi-final of the season, having reached consecutive finals in Sofia and Rotterdam, and another semi-final in Monte Carlo. He will attempt to reach his second semi-final in Gstaad, having made it all the way to the final in 2015 before losing to Dominic Thiem.

The man who’s looking to stop him in Haase, an opponent who knows quite a bit about making deep runs in Gstaad. Haase is a two-time former finalist in the Swiss city, losing to Mikhail Youzhny in 2013, and then to Feliciano Lopez last year. He also reached the semi-finals in 2014. He has always enjoyed his time in Gstaad; could this be the year when he finally goes all the way?

Haase is one of those players who always carry the tag ‘dangerous’ along with them almost everywhere they go. He has again looked dangerous in Gstaad, coming through his opening couple of matches without dropping a set, and without dropping his serve. In fact, the 30-year-old faced just two break points in seeing off Renzo Olivo 6-1 6-4 in the first round, and didn’t give up a single break point in  his 7-5 7-5 victory over Brazilian, Thiago Monteiro in the second round. There was a nice symmetry about the way Haase went about his business against Monteiro, as he broke to love in the eleventh game of each set before serving out the respective sets.

Haase is contesting his fourth quarter final of the season- the previous three being in Auckland, Dubai and Halle. Only once- in Dubai- has he progressed beyond the last eight of a tournament in 2017. He will like his chances of reaching a second semi-final when he takes on a vulnerable Goffin on Friday.

Goffin has a perfect 3-0 record against Haase, with two of those victories coming in 2017. The Belgian was a 7-6 6-2 victor in Doha, while he edged a 5-7 6-4 6-4 win in Rotterdam. All three previous meetings have been on hard courts.

Goffin plays even better on clay, and under normal circumstances, he should take this one, but the Belgian has not been firing on all cylinders since his return from injury. There is a big chance for the dangerous Haase to score his first ever victory over Goffin on Friday.
