Novak Djokovic’s busy January will see the World No. 2 compete at the Adelaide International ahead of his Australian Open title defence.

Djokovic has been confirmed for the return of the Adelaide International, which begins on January 12 and runs through to January 18, with the Australian Open beginning two days later. Djokovic won the 2007 Adelaide International, but the tournament was only played for one more season before moving to Brisbane in 2009.

With the Serbian also committed to playing the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi from December 19-21 and the ATP Cup from January 3, Djokovic is set for heavy schedule to launch the 2020 season.

It’s the first time since 2009 that Djokovic will play the week before the Australian Open. Djokovic lost to Jarkko Nieminen in the Sydney semi-finals that season, before retiring with fatigue against Andy Roddick in the Australian Open quarter-finals.

Djokovic will be aiming for a record-extending seventh Australian Open title in 2020 after beating Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the 2019 final.

The 32-year-old registered a 57-11 record in 2019, adding another major title at Wimbledon to increase his tally to 16, but he ended up relinquishing the No. 1 ranking to Nadal in Paris and couldn’t regain it at the season-ending championships in London, failing to make it out of the group stage after losing to Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer.

Djokovic will be joined in Adelaide by a bunch of rising stars, including home favourite Alex de Minaur, teenage sensation Felix Auger-Aliassime and Russia’s Andrey Rublev.

“I am looking forward to playing at the Adelaide International in January,” De Minaur said.
“2019 has been an exciting year so I am hoping to continue this form in the lead up to the 2020 Australian Open.
“I have heard a lot about the redevelopment happening at Memorial Drive. It is going to be really special to be a part of the first tournament held under the roof and I think we will see lots of Aussie fans coming to support this new event.”

The Adelaide International will be staged at Memorial Drive - which has undergone a $11 million redevelopment - from January 12-18. The ATP event is a 250, while the WTA tournament is Premier-level, with players competing for a combined $2 million in prizemoney.

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty and fellow Grand Slam champions Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova and Angelique Kerber have also been confirmed for the WTA tournament.
