Djokovic intends to play at the Australian Open 'for now'

In his first competitive match since July of last year, Novak Djokovic received a warm welcome at the Kooyong Classic exhibition event - where he took on Dominic Thiem.

Djokovic looked sharp against the World No.5, defeating him in straight sets 6-1 6-4.

Showcasing a shortened service motion in the match, the 30-year said he was "very happy with how it went" after his win. Asked about his participation at the Australian Open next week, he responded, "For now I'm in the tournament."

"There was a doubt, especially after I pulled out of the first week of the year", he admitted.
"I don't say I'm at a 100%, I can only say that when I get a feel of the tournament. Ideally I would have had another tournament before the start of the Open, but it was not meant to be."

The 12-time major champion raised many questions about his fitness for the first major of the year, after pulling out of the Mubadala exhibition - citing pain in his right elbow. But he seemed fit and without pain during his match against the 24-year old Thiem.

"I am very very happy with the way it went today, I am hoping in the next four, five days everything will go well and I am ready for the Australian Open."
