After taking down the obdurate Gilles Simon, Roger Federer seeks his 19th straight win in Basel, and a 14th final in his home tournament when he takes on Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Federer has been a mixed bag in his home tournament, alternating trademark sublime shot-making with eye-popping errors, but he has done just about enough to reach the semi-finals, keeping his bid for a ninth Basel crown alive.

The great Swiss was dragged to three sets by Filip Krajinovic in the first round, and while he was better against Jan-Lennard Struff in the round, he had to fight back from break down in the first set, and he let the German hang around until deep in the second set before putting him away.

The Swiss was taken to three sets again by Simon in the quarter finals, but he pulled through in the end, scoring a 7-6 4-6 6-4 victory to move into his 200th tour-level semi-final.

Federer slipped into a 3-0 deficit after a flurry of unforced errors, and while he tried to force his way back into the set, he was resisted by Simon in characteristic style. Federer eventually had his way late in the set, breaking Simon as the Frenchman attempted to close it out before dominating the ensuing tie break.

Simon has never been one to give up a cause, and twice, he lead by a break in the second set, only to be pegged back immediately. The third break in the ninth game was the charm though as he went on to serve out the set and force a decider.

Federer took charge of the final set with an early break for a 3-0 lead, but his roller coaster night continued as Simon reached parity at 4-4. However, the 20-time Grand Slam champion strung together the next two games to escape with victory after two hours and 36 minutes.

Federer is looking to win his fourth title of the season in Basel, having already claimed the Australian Open, Rotterdam and Stuttgart earlier in the year. The Swiss heads into Saturday's match against Medvedev seeking his 70th match win at his home tournament, and should he get the win, he will advance to a 14th final at the Swiss Indoors.

Will it be another record-making day for Federer, or can Medvedev spoil the Swiss party?

Medvedev has really stepped up his performances in the last three months, moving into the top 20 after claiming titles in Winston-Salem and Tokyo.

The Russian had actually made a fine start to the year, winning his first career title in Pune, but his form dipped badly for a lengthy stretch after that, only for him to hit back strongly in August. Apart from his two titles, he has made a semi -final in Moscow, a quarter final in St. Petersburg, and the third round of the US Open. The only tournament where he failed to win consecutive matches in this excellent spell was Shanghai, where he was stopped by Roger Federer in three sets.

Can he earn his revenge over the great Swiss on Saturday?

After straight sets victories over Maximilian Marterer and Andreas Seppi earned him a quarter final berth in Basel, Medvedev scored a big win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last eight, beating the Greek 6-4 3-6 6-3 to end Tsitsipas's six-match winning streak.

Just one break decided each set, with Medvedev scoring the decisive break in the eighth game of the final set before serving out the match to extend his head-to-head lead over Tsitsipas to 3-0.

His head-to-head against Federer is less impressive, but Medvedev certainly gave a very good account of himself in the only previous meeting between the two- that aforementioned loss in Shanghai. Federer might not have played his best to get into the last four, but the great man does have the ability to flick the switch and find his form, in which case, he will be far too good for Medvedev, like he has been against many players through the years.

"I think it's going to be a tough semi. I'm very excited, apparently it's my 200th semi-final on the Tour," Federer said. "It's something I'm very excited about, that it also happened here in Basel."

However, Federer has been offering up chances in Basel this week, and while his previous opponents were unable to profit, Medvedev could be the man to gobble up those chances.

Roger Federer vs Daniil Medvedev is live from Basel on Saturday, 27 October from 4:00pm local time/ 3:00pm BST
