Top seed, Fabio Fognini opens his Umag campaign on Wednesday when he plays fellow Italian, Stefano Travaglia in the second round.

The first part of the 2019 season was one of two halves for Fognini- he struggled through the first quarter of the year, stuttering to a 4-8 record, but he turned his season around in spectacular fashion in Monte Carlo, where he defeated Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals before claiming his maiden Masters 1000 title with victory over Dusan Lajovic in the final.

Fognini hasn't hit those heights since that success, but he has at least been a lot steadier than he was at the start of the season. The Italian reached the Round of 16 in Madrid and Rome, losing to Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas, while he was stopped by Alexander Zverev in the fourth round of the French Open.

That Roland Garros result was good enough to lift Fognini into the top-ten for the first time in his career, as he became the oldest player to debut in the top ten.

The 32-year-old then reached the third round at Wimbledon, battling through five-set matches against Frances Tiafoe and Marton Fucsovics before falling to Tennys Sandgren in straights.

Fognini has been a constant feature in Umag over the years, winning the title in 2016 three years after he lost to Tommy Robredo in the final, but he wasn't present last season, choosing instead to compete in Bastad in the corresponding week, where he interestingly went on to claim the title!

Fognini has reached at least the Umag quarter finals in each of his last five visits- between 2013 and 2017- and he will look to keep that trend going when he plays Travaglia on Wednesday.

Travaglia scored a 6-3 6-2 victory over another Italian, Thomas Fabbiano in the first round, hitting four aces and saving all six break points he faced to take out his compatriot, who was coming off a third-round run at Wimbledon.

Travaglia served at only 45%, but he dropped just five points on his first serve, and generally played the big points better to get away with the victory.

It was Travaglia's second tour-level match win of the season, and a first since he defeated Guido Andreozzi in the first round of the Australian Open in January. Since then, he has lost to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round in Melbourne, and fallen in the opening rounds in Sofia and Roland Garros in his sporadic trips to the main tour.

He has spent most of his year in the Challengers, winning in Francavilla, reaching the final in Shymkent, and making semi-finals in Cherbourg, Heilbronn and Ludwigshafen. Those results pushed him into the top-100 in June, but he slipped to his current mark of 105th after an early exit in Braunschweig last week.

Travaglia defeated Fognini in four sets in their only previous meeting at the US Open in 2017, and given that victory, and the fact that he has had a long unbroken spell on clay, relative to Fognini, who must now readjust from grass to clay, the upset is not out of the question here.

I still think Fognini will win- he has a fine record in Umag, and is a natural on this surface, and he's of course the No. 1 seed. That extra bit of quality should guide him into the quarter finals.
