Still looking to really get going this season, Russia's Karen Khachanov opens his Rotterdam campaign on Tuesday against Dutchman, Tallon Griekspoor, the local wildcard who upset Stan Wawrinka at the same stage last season.

Khachanov made giant strides last season, winning three titles, including a huge one in Paris at the end of the year. There, he defeated four top-ten players, John Isner, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and world No. 1, Novak Djokovic to win his first Masters 1000 crown, moving to the brink of the top ten as a consequence.

He has not quite kicked on from there at the start of 2019, stuttering to a 2-3 record for the season. Khachanov lost his season opener to Stan Wawrinka in an admittedly difficult first-round Doha draw, while his Australian Open campaign was ended in the third round by Roberto Bautista-Agut. He suffered his second opening round exit of the season in Sofia, falling surprisingly to fellow 22-year-old, the Italian, Matteo Berrettini in three sets.

He did enjoy some success in the Davis Cup in between all of that, scoring two victories to propel Russia into November's finals in Madrid.

Apart from his Paris title last year, Khachanov also went all the way in Marseille and Moscow, and compiled a tour-leading 20-4 record on indoor hard courts. His good work was not restricted to indoor tournaments, as he also made the semi-finals in Toronto and fourth round at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. His current record isn’t representative of the quality of the player, and he will get in right at some point this season. Perhaps this is the week when he starts motoring?

He is certainly expected to get past home wildcard, Griekspoor on Tuesday- but then again, Stan Wawrinka was expected to do the same last year.

Griekspoor's win over Wawrinka was his first ever victory at tour-level, and remains his only one till date, as he lost to Robin Haase in the following round, and has not appeared in any main draw since then.

Instead, he has been navigating around the Futures and Challenger tours, his best result being a title run in the Tampere Challenger in Finland last season, while his attempts to get into a tour-level draw were met with qualifying defeats at Roland Garros, the US Open and Antwerp. That victory in Tampere took him into the top 200 for the first time in his career, reaching a career-high 181st in the world, but he was out of the top 200 by the end of the year, finishing at 231st.

His qualifying woes continued at the start of 2019 as he fell to Bjorn Frantangelo in the first qualifying round of the Australian Open, but he found more joy in the Challengers yet again, reaching the semi-finals in Koblenz, Germany. He fell to Nobert Gombos in the opening round of his most recent tournament in Budapest (also a Challenger).

Can a return to the scene of the biggest win of his career inspire the Dutch wild card, ranked 211st in the world, to another stunning win over world No. 11, Karen Khachanov?

The fact that he has done it before means he can do it again, but don’t they also say that lightening doesn't strike twice in the same place. There is nothing else to support any arguments that he can beat Khachanov, except that he defeated Stan Wawrinka 12 months ago, which is a fair argument I suppose, but then, Wawrinka was quite right physically, and emotionally, perhaps. Khachanov's dodgy start to the season also lends credence to the possibility of the upset, but the world No. 11 should be good for the Dutchman on the day.
