Russia's top two, Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov go head-to-head in Moscow on Saturday with a spot in the Kremlin Cup final on offer.

Both Khachanov and Medvedev have been on the rise this year, with Russian No. 1, Medvedev currently sitting at a career-high ranking of 21st, while Khachanov isn't too far behind on 26th, having peaked at No. 24 in September.

Medvedev in particular has been in excellent form in recent weeks, winning the title in two of his last five tournaments. Within that time, the Russian has built up an 18-3 record, with his three losses coming against Roger Federer (Shanghai), Dominic Thiem (St. Petersburg) and Borna Coric (the US Open). This recent run began in Winston-Salem, where he claimed his second title of the season, but even more impressive was his title-run at the ATP 500 meet in Tokyo, where he came through a quality field comprising Diego Schwartzman, Martin Klizan, Milos Raonic, Denis Shapovalov and Kei Nishikori without dropping a set.

Those titles in Winston-Salem and Tokyo took Medvedev's tally for the season to three as the 22-year-old had begun his 2018 ATP World Tour campaign by claiming his first career title in Sydney.

He could not sustain that Sydney form, as he made just one quarter final, in Rotterdam, in his next 17 tournaments. Within that period, Medvedev fell as low as 68th on the rankings, but a sharp rise in his form over the last three months has taken him to the brink of the top 20. The world number 21 dismissed Dusan Lajovic 6-2 6-1 in his Moscow opener, but was made to work harder by Ricardas Berankis in the second round, before eventually coming through 6-2 1-6 6-4 to set up a quarter final meeting with compatriot, Khachanov.

While Medvedev is the man-in-form, Khachanov has arguably had the steadier campaign. He has only one title to show for his efforts, in Marseille, but he made a first Masters 1000 semi-final in Toronto, reached the fourth round at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and had other quarter finals in Auckland, Montpellier and Halle.

His results leading up to Moscow were not as good as Medvedev's, as he had not made a quarter final since his semi-final run in Toronto, but he has had some really rough draws within that period, with four of with five losses coming against Grand Slam champions, Marin Cilic, Rafael Nadal, Juan Martin del Potro and Stan Wawrinka. The other defeat was against rising Greek, Stefanos Tsitsipas in Shanghai.

Khachanov is yet to drop a set this week, beating Lukas Rosol 6-4 7-5 in the opening round, and then Mirza Basic, 6-2 7-6 in the quarter finals to take his place in the last four, where he faces Medvedev on Saturday.

Medvedev came from a set down to beat Khachanov in their only previous meeting at the Next Gen ATP Finals last season, but given all the rules changes and innovations in that tournament, including four-game sets, the dynamics on Saturday will be very different from that Milan meeting.

"I have no choice. We are both Russians. We are both playing at home. We are both motivated to win," Khachanov said. "We are friends off court, but on court we are rivals. I think we're going to have a great match".

Who will claim the bragging rights in this all-Russia battle and move on to the Kremlin Cup final? I’ll lean towards Khachanov, just because I think he is more consistent and more reliable- despite Medvedev’s recent results. Khachanov will find it tough to deal with the flatness of Medvedev’s groundstrokes, but the former generates more weight and control off the ground, and that could be difference in the end.
