Canada Masters and Washington runner-up Daniil Medvedev aims for yet another hardcourt quarter-final when he meets the in-form Jan-Lennard Struff in the Cincinnati Masters Round of 16 on Thursday.

One year ago, Medvedev was ranked No. 56 in the world and was forced to qualify for the Cincinnati Masters, but fast forward to the present day, and the Russian is at a career-high ranking of No. 8 and playing some sensational tennis to be in prime position to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals in London. Medvedev has continued his great form this week in Cincinnati, advancing into the R16 with a pair of straight sets victories over Kyle Edmund and Benoit Paire.

Medvedev started his swift rise up the rankings by winning the ATP 500 Japan Open in Tokyo towards the end of last season, but he’s taken his game to another level in 2019, winning the title in a strong Brisbane field, making the Australian Open fourth round (taking a set off Novak Djokovic), capturing his fourth career title in Sofia, advancing to the semi-finals in Rotterdam, the fourth round of Miami and then beating Djokovic to reach his maiden Masters 1000 semi-final in Monte-Carlo. By the time Medvedev had conquered Kei Nishikori to make the 500-level Barcelona Open final in April, he’d won the most matches out of anyone on tour. However, after losing that final 4-6 0-6 to Dominic Thiem, Medvedev experienced a dip in form, winning just five matches until the U.S. Open Series.

But Medvedev is once again flourishing on his favourite surface of hardcourts, making consecutive finals in Washington and Montreal, losing to Nick Kyrgios and Rafael Nadal respectively. A maiden Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati would propel Medvedev into the top five, but unfortunately for him, he’s in the strong top half of the draw and not the depleted bottom half, where Roberto Bautista Agut is the highest-ranked player in the Round of 16. A potential quarter-final with Roger Federer awaits, but first Medvedev must make it past one of the tour’s most improved players.

Jan-Lennard Struff has secured four of his six career top 10 wins this season and he will be going for another scalp over an elite player when he faces Medvedev on Thursday. One of those victories came on Wednesday in Cincinnati, with Struff edging out fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas by a 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(6) scoreline, striking 16 aces and winning 85 per cent of points behind his first serve. Struff also extended his record in deciding set tiebreaks to eight wins from 10 matches, illustrating just how clutch he’s become.

It’s been a promising run of form for Struff, who has always had the brute firepower to be ranked much higher, but he’s been let down by is inconsistency and inability to produce his best tennis week to week and even match to match. Struff is yet to make an ATP final and didn’t even make a semi-final last season (he did reach the third rounds of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open), but his form this season has been strong, with the German registering a 28-19 record - and although he still hasn’t made a final, he’s been very consistent in reaching semi-finals in Auckland and Stuttgart, the quarter-finals in Barcelona, the fourth round of Roland Garros and third round of Wimbledon, along with the Round of 16 at Indian Wells.

Medvedev has won both of their tour-level meetings in Hamburg 2016 and Marseille 2017, but both are different players today. Medvedev will try and utilise his maddening consistency and overall awkward baseline game to frustrate the hard-hitting Struff into error, and that is most likely how the bulk of baseline exchanges will play out. Struff will need to be ultra-aggressive and execute to perfection - I can see him powering his way to a set, but if Medvedev isn’t too fatigued from his last fortnight, the Russian has the advantage in this match-up on hardcourts.
