World no. 2 Rafael Nadal won't be competing at next week's Shanghai Rolex Masters due to injury.

It had been rumoured that Nadal would be pulling out of the penultimate Masters 1000 Series event of the season for some days, but the withdrawal was made official by the tournament on Friday morning.

'I am very sad to announce that I won’t be able to play in Shanghai this year. It is the second year in a row and in China I have great fans. The tournament is amazing and the city one of the most special places around the world,' Nadal's statement read.

'But, as you all probably know, I had an inflammation on my left wrist during the Laver Cup and I haven’t had the time to recover and practice to be ready for this amazing event. I hope to be back in Shanghai for the 2020 tournament.'

Nadal has only played at the Laver Cup exhibition since winning his nineteenth Grand Slam title at the US Open in early September. He played a singles match and a doubles match back-to-back on day 2 of the event held this year in Geneva but withdrew from a scheduled singles match on the Sunday, citing the left wrist injury.

Nadal finished runner-up to Roger Federer on his last appearance at the Shanghai Masters (PA Sports)
The Spanish player holds a record 35 Masters 1000 Series titles but has never won in Shanghai, although he reached the final in 2009 (finishing runner-up to Nikolay Davydenko) and 2017 (finishing runner-up to Roger Federer). He pulled out of the tournament in 2018 due to a knee injury.

It's not been unusual for Nadal's seasons to come to truncated ends. He did not play at all after the US Open in 2018 and has only played the season-ending ATP Finals twice in the last five years despite qualifying every year.

Nadal is still scheduled to play the Rolex Paris Masters, beginning on 28 October, the Nitto ATP Finals, beginning on 10 November, and the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid, beginning 18 November.

He is also expected to marry long-time partner Xisca Perella later this month.

Nadal's absence from Shanghai gives Novak Djokovic an opportunity to make up ground in the battle for year-end world no. 1. Djokovic, who retired in the fourth round of the US Open with a shoulder injury, has returned to action at the Rakuten Japan Open this week and has reached the semifinals in Tokyo.

Djokovic, the defending champion, will be leading the field at the Shanghai Rolex Masters alongside two-time champion Roger Federer and three-time winner Andy Murray.
