The 33-year-old put together an excellent 2019, winning major titles at Roland Garros and the US Open to take his Grand Slam tally up to 19- just one behind Roger Federer's all-time record of 20. The Spaniard also won Masters 1000 titles in Rome and Montreal, and crowned a brilliant season by propelling Spain to a sixth Davis Cup title.
This is the fifth time Nadal has secured the year-end No. 1 ranking, matching Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in that department. Pete Sampras, with six, holds the record for the most year-end No. 1 finishes.
Nadal has an 840-point lead over Novak Djokovic on top of the rankings, with both men set to begin the 2020 season at the ATP Cup in Australia.
