Rafael Nadal contests his 15th straight quarter finals at the Monte Carlo Masters as he takes on Argentine, Guido Pella on Friday.

Nadal is seeking a record-breaking 12th title in Monte Carlo, and a first ATP World Tour title since last August's Toronto Masters.

A good part of that title drought has been due to his injury problems, with the Spaniard effectively shutting down 2018 after retiring from his US Open semi-final against Juan Martin del Potro, while he had played just three tournaments this season heading into the Monte Carlo Masters. He was runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, lost to Nick Kyrgios in the second round in Acapulco and withdrew from a scheduled Indian Wells semi-final meeting with Roger Federer due to a knee injury.

Playing his first match since that retirement, Nadal showed no signs of rust in his Monte Carlo opener against Roberto Bautista-Agut, dismissing his fellow Spaniard 6-1 6-1 after an hour and 15 minutes. The King of Clay was pushed harder in the third round by Grigor Dimitrov- in a repeat of last year's semi-final, but he survived an inspired passage of play from Dimitrov midway through the first set to pull off an ultimately comfortable 6-1 6-4 victory.

Nadal picked up from where he left off in his previous match, jumping out to a 4-1 lead against Dimitrov, but the Bulgarian produced a rousing fightback, playing the sort of tennis that once took him to No. 3 in the world to get the score back to 4-4. However, he could not quite sustain that level, as Nadal won eight of the last nine games to record his 12th victory in 13 matches against Dimitrov, and the third in three meetings in Monte Carlo.

The great Spaniard extends his current Monte Carlo winning streak to 17 matches, improving to an incredible 80-4 lifetime at the tournament.

Next up for the world No. 2 is Argentine, Guido Pella, who is into a Masters 1000 quarter final for the first time in his career.

Pella is having quite the season on clay, as he has amassed an impressive 14-3 record on the surface in 2019. His exploits have included a title run in Sao Paolo- his maiden tour title- a runner-up finish in Cordoba, a semi-final in Buenos Aires, and now, a Masters 1000 quarter final in Monte Carlo.

He hasn't had as much success on hard courts, as he has won just two matches on the surface this season, in Doha and Indian Wells, but he has been having the time of his life on clay. Pella has come through a really difficult draw too, needing three sets to get through each of the previous three rounds. He defeated Laslo Djere, who was terrific on the South American clay, in the first round, took out former top-ten mainstay, Marin Cilic in the second, and battled past French Open semi-finalist, Marco Cecchinato in the third to set up Friday's meeting with Nadal.

This week's achievements are even more impressive given that the Argentine had never won a match in Monte Carlo prior to this season.

Currently ranked 35th in the world, Pella reached a career-high mark of 32nd earlier in the season, but he is set to smash that highest ranking with this Monte Carlo run, as he is projected to break into the top 30 when the rankings are updated next Monday.

However, his tournament will most likely come to an end on Friday, as he crashes into the finest clay-courter ever to set foot on the planet.

Nadal is 2-0 against Pella, and won 6-2 6-1 6-1 in their only previous meeting on clay at Roland Garros last year. Pella is playing well enough to make this quarter final more competitive, and Nadal briefly showed signs of vulnerability in his victory over Dimitrov, but the Spaniard should still be far too good for his Argentine opponent on Friday.
