French Open finalist, Dominic Thiem is back on his favourite clay this week, but he faces a tricky start to his Hamburg campaign on Tuesday as he plays Uruguayan, Pablo Cuevas in the first round.

Thiem returns to clay after an unsuccessful and brief stint on grass- he played just one match on the surface, losing to Sam Querrey in an admittedly difficult first round draw at Wimbledon.

Before that, the Austrian had put together another quality clay-court season, culminating in runner-up finish at Roland Garros, where he lost to Rafael Nadal for a second straight year. Thiem had earlier beaten Nadal en route the Barcelona Open title- his biggest clay-court title in Europe- while he made the semi-finals in Madrid, losing to Novak Djokovic in two tie breaks. It has not been all plain sailing for Thiem on clay this year, as he was short of his best on the South American dirt earlier in the season, going 2-2 between Buenos Aires and Rio.

Ironically, Thiem's biggest title came away from clay, with the Austrian surprisingly claiming his maiden Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells, beating Roger Federer in the final. That victory took Thiem back into the top-four, a position he currently maintains.

The 25-year-old is back in Hamburg for a second straight year, and he will be keen to better his quarter final finish from last season, when he was beaten by Chilean, Nicolas Jarry. He's got a testing start on Tuesday, as he takes on clay-court expert, Cuevas- a finalist in Hamburg in 2016.

Cuevas has unsurprisingly played his best tennis on clay this season, reaching the final in Estoril, where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas, making semi-finals in Rio and Cordoba, and quarter finals in Buenos Aires and Budapest. He also reached the third round at Roland Garros, where he co-incidentally lost to Thiem in four sets.

Cuevas has also enjoyed clay-court success at Challenger level this year, winning titles in Tunis and Aix-en-Provence. The 33-year-old has won just two tour-level matches away from clay, one each at the Australian Open (against Dusan Lajovic), and Wimbledon (against Damir Dzumhur). He has lost opening matches in Auckland, Miami, Eastbourne, as well as on the clay of Sao Paolo, Houston, and most recently, Bastad, where he was beaten by Federico Delbonis.

Cuevas is playing in Hamburg for a fifth straight season, with his best result being a runner-up finish in 2016, when he was beaten by Martin Klizan. He has won just one match at the venue since then- against Marton Fucsovics in the opening round last year.

The world No. 47 (career-high 19th in 2016) trails Dominic Thiem 2-4 in their head-to-head, with one of his two victories coming via a Thiem retirement at Indian Wells last season. Hence, Thiem has won their last four completed matches, including their two meetings this year in Buenos Aires and Roland Garros.

Cuevas took a set off Thiem in each of those two matches, and he could run the Austrian close again, but the top seed should again be too strong for the Uruguayan on Tuesday.
