Coming off a breakthrough campaign in 2018, Greek young gun, Stefanos Tsitsipas opens his 2019 ATP World Tour season on Wednesday when he takes on Argentine lucky loser, Guido Andreozzi in the second round of the Sydney International.

Can the 20-year-old Tsitsipas continue his meteoric rise up the ATP ranks and possibly crack the top-ten this season?

Tsitsipas won his first career title last year in Stockholm, where he took down John Millman, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Fabio Fognini and Ernest Gulbis without dropping a set, while he closed out a superb season by winning the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, defeating Alex De Minaur in the championship match.

The Greek had earlier reached marquee finals at the ATP 500 meet in Barcelona and the Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto (lost both matches to Rafael Nadal), while he had his best Grand Slam showing at Wimbledon, where he made the fourth round. His efforts in Toronto were particularly outstanding, as he eliminated four top ten players- Dominic Thiem, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Kevin Anderson before falling to Nadal in the final. He also made semi-finals in Washington and Estoril, and went on to finish the year at 15th in the world, having begun the season outside the top 90.

Opting to start the new season at the Hopman Cup in Perth, where he teamed up with Maria Sakkari for Greece, Tsitsipas had a mixed campaign, losing to Great Britain's Cameron Norrie in his opening singles' match before battling past Frances Tiafoe in three sets. He then pushed Roger Federer to two tie breaks in his final round robin match, and had a 4-1 lead in the opening set breaker, but he ultimately fell 7-6 7-6 to the great Swiss as Greece finished second in the group.

Competing in Sydney for the first time, the 20-year-old old goes in search of his first ATP World Tour win of the season when he plays Andreozzi on Wednesday.

Argentine, Andreozzi had lost to Andrey Rublev in the qualifying rounds of the Sydney International, but he sneaked into the main draw via the lucky loser route following the withdrawal of Chile's Nicolas Jarry.

Andreozzi made the most of his opportunity, beating Australia's Matt Ebden 3-6 6-3 6-4 to record his first tour-level main draw victory since Winston-Salem last August, where, also as a lucky loser, he defeated Marton Fucsovics and Radu Albot before falling to eventual champion, Daniil Medvedev. His only other main draw victory in 2018 was a five-set win over Taylor Fritz in the first round of the French Open- his first ever victory at Grand Slam level. Andreozzi spent most of his season on the Challenger Tour, winning titles in Punta del Este in Uruguay, Tunis, Szczecin and Guayaquil in Ecuador, all on clay, and making the final in Marbella, also on clay.

The Argentine had begun 2018 ranked just inside the top 200, while he was down at 245th in the world by the end of February, but he played his way back into the world's top 100, reaching a career-high ranking of 78th, and ending the year one spot lower.

After his impressive win over Ebden in his 2019 opener in Sydney, can he take the big scalp of the tournament's top seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas in Round 2 on Wednesday?

Tsitsipas and Andreozzi have met once before, at a Challenger Tournament in Genova in 2017, when Tsitsipas scored a 6-3 6-4 victory, and given the massive improvements the world No. 15 has made since then, against an opponent who does most of his work on clay, the Greek should be too powerful in Sydney on Wednesday. Rustiness is obviously not much of a factor for top seed, Tsitsipas, who is coming off a good week of match practice in Perth.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Guido Andreozzi is live from Sydney on Wednesday, 9 January from 4:00pm local time/ 5:00am GMT
