Playing his best tennis since returning from multiple knee surgeries, Stan Wawrinka seeks a quarter final berth at the Cincinnati Masters when he takes on Hungarian, Marton Fucsovics on Friday. Wawrinka led 2-1, on serve before rain stopped play on Thursday.

Wawrinka is looking to win three consecutive matches for the first time since last year’s French Open, when he lost the final against Rafael Nadal. Since then, it’s been a struggle for the Swiss, crashing to an opening round defeat to Daniil Medvedev at Wimbledon, and subsequently missing the rest of the season after undergoing multiple knee surgeries.

Wawrinka returned to the tour for the 2018 Australian Open, but his comeback never got going, and went off again for another three months after retiring from the opening round in Marseille.

The 33-year-old rejoined the tour for the Rome Masters in May, and went seven tournaments without winning back-to-back matches, but things have started looking up for the Swiss in the North American hard-court swing. The three-time Grand Slam champion reached the Round of 16 in last week’s Rogers Cup, beating Nick Kyrgios and Fucsovics in deciding sets, and pushing Rafael Nadal hard in last 16 exit, and he built on that in Cincinnati, scoring two fine wins over Diego Schwartzman and Kei Nishikori. Trailing 1-4 against Nishikori, Wawrinka reeled off seven straight games to take the first set, and open up a 2-0 lead in the second, and there was no catching him from there. He missed two match points on Nishikori’s serve at 5-3, but he closed out the match to love in the next game.

“I feel [my game] is getting there… I was feeling great on the court… I need to just be patient with myself, to accept things that are happening and by doing that, I know that I will get there.” Wawrinka said.

“There was some really tough moments [after the surgeries]," Wawrinka said. It's been a year now. Today, for sure, I'm smiling, I'm happy. I won two matches here. I beat Nishikori playing a great level”.

Wawrinka is looking to reach the quarter finals in Cincinnati for the fourth time, having made the last four in 2012, and back-to-back quarter finals in 2014 and 2015. The man who is out to stop him is Hungarian, Marton Fucsovics, in a rematch of last week’s meeting in Toronto.

Wawrinka saved four match points against Fucsovics in Toronto, battling back from a set down, and a break down in the final set to record a grueling 1-6 7-6 7-6 victory after two hours and 45 minutes. Will the Hungarian get his revenge in Cincinnati?

Fucsovics is enjoying a career-best season, picking up his first career title on the clay of Geneva, where he co-incidentally, had beaten Wawrinka in the quarter finals. It’s not been the most consistent year for the 26-year-old, but he has had a couple of very good results, notably, a fourth-round run at the Australian Open, and that title-winning run in Geneva. Apart from those two, the only other tournament he won consecutive matches prior to Cincinnati was Munich, where he beat Guido Pella and Marco Cecchinato before falling to Maximilian Marterer in the quarter finals.

The Hungarian has beefed up his points with some very good runs on the Challenger Tour, particularly in the opening months of the season, when he had a runner-up finish in Canberra, and semi-finals in Budapest and Irving. He has had a long list of opening round exits on the main tour- Miami, Marrakech, Monte Carlo, Budapest, Halle, Wimbledon and Hamburg, but he has found another good run in Cincinnati, pulling off come-from-behind three-set victories over Hurbert Hurkacz and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez to earn another shot at Wawrinka.

It’s a third meeting between the two, with the head-to-head split at 1-1. Fucsovics dismissed Wawrinka 6-4 6-0 en route the Geneva title, but Wawrinka responded with a battling win in Toronto, saving four match points in the process. Having dug out those victories in Toronto, Wawrinka has played with a lot more confidence and belief in Cincinnati. His recovery from injury continues to be work-in-progress, but he is playing at a level high enough to take down Fucsovics for the second straight week.

Stan Wawrinka vs Marton Fucsovics is live from Cincinnati on Friday, 17 August from 1:30pm local time/ 5:30pm BST
