The official seedings for Wimbledon 2019 have been released with defending champion Novak Djokovic and new women's world no. 1 Ashleigh Barty leading the lists for the men's and women's singles at The Championships.

Qualifying is already underway for Wimbledon 2019 with main-draw play due to begin on Monday 1 July.

Men's seedings at Wimbledon are determined by the use of a special formula which gives greater weight to players' results on grass over the past two years.

As a result, while world no. 1 Djokovic remains the top seed, world no. 3 Roger Federer has been seeded second ahead of world no. 2 Rafael Nadal, reversing their position in the rankings.

This is because of Federer's superior results on grass courts over the past 104 weeks, including winning Wimbledon in 2017, Stuttgart in 2018 and Halle in 2019. Overall he has a 26-2 record on grass over the past two years.

By comparison, Nadal is 8-2 on grass over the past two years and hasn't reached a final on the surface for four years.

Nevertheless, Nadal complained that the Wimbledon method of seeding players 'doesn't seem right' and suggested it 'does not respect the ranking [players] have earned'. Nadal's ire is rooted in the fact that if he is seeded third, he would be likely to face Federer or Djokovic in the semifinals. If he was seeded second, he could not face Djokovic until the final and would have a 50/50 chance of Federer being drawn in the opposite half.

Djokovic has expressed some support for Nadal's position.

'It’s their rules and you have to respect it although it’s a little bit surprising to be honest,' Djokovic told Reuters.

'Roger is the greatest of all time and has won the most Wimbledon titles of any player in history and if any player deserves it it’s him. But at the same time it’s Nadal that he is taking over (from as) the second seed so it’s surprising to be honest.'
