Citi Open 2016 matches for Saturday, July 23 - Monfils, Putintseva head the semi-final action

Yulia Putintseva will be in action today.

The semi-finals of 2016 Citi Open will be played on Saturday, July 23 with Gael Monfils and Yulia Putintseva heading the draw.

Second seeded Frenchman Monfils will take on German wildcard entrant and seventh seed Alexander Zverev in the evening at the stadium court. Monfils beat Sam Querrey in three sets in the quarterfinal after defeating Yen-Hsun Lu and Borna Coric in the second and third rounds here.

Zverev downed Benoit Paire in straight sets in his quarterfinal fixture. The German had ran through Taylor Fritz and Malek Jaziri in the earlier rounds at the tournament.

Monfils has a 100 percent win record against Zverev from two previous meetings and will start as the favourite to go through to the final.

Ladies’ sixth seed Putintseva will be up against Belgian seventh seed Yanina Wickmayer in their semi-final fixture at the stadium court. Putintseva defeated Risa Ozaki 6-4, 6-2 in straight sets in the quarterfinal after having beaten Varvara Flink and Usue Maitane Arconda in the first two rounds.

Wickmayer comes into the semi-finals on the backs of a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Kristina Mladenovic of France in the quarterfinal. She had previously gone past Madison Brengle and Shuai Zhang in straight sets in the first two rounds here at Washington.

These two ladies have met just once in the past at the 2013 WTA Birmingham. Wickmayer had won in straight sets on that occasion and will start as the favourite to make it into the final on Sunday.

Earlier in the afternoon, fifth seeded American Steve Johnson will take on 13th seeded Croatian Ivo Karlovic in the first men’s semi-final. Johnson beat John Isner in straight sets in the quarterfinal on Friday after achieving similar results against Adrian Mannarino and Ryan Harrison in the first two rounds.

Karlovic started with a straight sets win over Brian Baker in the first round before he beat Bernard Tomic in similar fashion in the second round. He faced a real test against Jack Sock in the quarterfinal but managed to edge his opponent out via two tie-breakers.

This will be the fifth career meeting between these two men. Johnson has a 3-1 advantage in the head-to-head stats and will start as the favourite to win on Saturday.
