Serena Williams stretched her lead away World No. 2 Li Na, after winning a record seventh Sony Open title in Miami.
It was a spirited start from the World No. 2 who had raced out to a 5-2 lead but Williams kicked into gear and never looked back, closing out a victory 7-5 6-1.
Williams continues to chase the records of Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf, as one of only four players to win the same WTA event seven or more times.
"It was a really important victory, especially playing Li Na, who has been playing so well," Williams said. "She started out so well - I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I just need to hang in here.' Then I heard some fans trying to pull me through - if it hadn't been for you guys I wouldn't be standing here right now."
Li, who was hunting for her 10th WTA title was in her usual good form at the microphone during the trophy presentation.
"Keeping healthy is the most important thing for me, and just trying to do the best I can," she said, before remembering one more thank you for the day. "Of course I want to thank my team as well!"
"Coach first! Husband is later, who cares. First my coach, and then my physio. Thanks a lot to both of them."
Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber, Dominika Cibulkova and Caroline Wozniacki all gained places this week.
Williams now heads to Charleston where she is the top seed in the WTA Premier Family Circle Cup.
