Karolina Pliskova is within striking distance of the No. 1 ranking after winning her fourth WTA title of the season on Sunday in Zhengzhou.

The Czech overcame multiple lengthy rain delays and an opponent who had beaten her in four of their five previous meetings to emerge triumphant with a tour-leading fourth title of the year. Petra Martic came out on top in their third round French Open clash earlier this season, but the Croatian was no match for Pliskova in Zhengzhou as the top seed recovered from 0-2 down in the first set to win 12 of the next 15 games to prevail by a 6-3 6-2 scoreline.

Pliskova is the only player to win a WTA title on every surface this season, adding the Zhengzhou silverware to trophies already secured in Brisbane, Rome and Eastbourne.

"I beat some good players, tough players, which I maybe lost to a couple times as well before,” Pliskova said. “I think that was the biggest plus of this week, especially with Petra, I think I lost a couple times in the last times. These wins are always important, doesn't matter where you play, which tournament you play, but it's always important.
"Of course to get the trophy it's always special, so it doesn't matter really which week or how big the tournament is, it's always good."

Although she’s struggled at the slams this season - save for a semi-final at the Australian Open - Pliskova has been very consistent on tour, and as a result, the Czech has a return to the No. 1 ranking in her sights for the remainder of the Asian swing.

Pliskova picked up 290 ranking points for her victory in Zhengzhou, which lifts her to within just 86 points of current No. 1 Ashleigh Barty. The pair are set to jostle back-and-forth for the No. 1 ranking in upcoming tournaments in Wuhan and Beijing.

Meanwhile, Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson landed herself a career milestone earlier on Sunday, winning her first WTA title at the Jiangxi Open in Nanchang, crushing Elena Rybakina 6-2 6-0 in the final.

It was a near-perfect performance from Peterson in her first final as she struck 13 winners to just one unforced error, with the victory propelling her to a career-high No. 52 in the world, while Rybakina climbed 20 spots to No. 49 courtesy of reaching the final.

Elsewhere, Nao Hibino and Misaki Doi squared off in the first all-Japanese WTA final in 22 years at the Hana-cupid Japan Women's Open in Hiroshima - and it was Hibino who emerged triumphant, winning 11 of the last 13 games to prevail 6-3 6-2.

Both players reclaimed places in the top 100 thanks to their resurgent weeks, with Hibino rising a whopping 59 places to No. 87, while Doi moves up 24 rungs on the rankings ladder to No. 83.

There wasn’t any movement in the top 20 last week, but that’s set to change this week with No. 3 Elina Svitolina leading the field in Guangzhou, alongside Wang Qiang and Sofia Kenin, while Naomi Osaka, Kiki Bertens, Sloane Stephens, Angelique Kerber, Madison Keys and Anastasija Sevastova are among those in action in Osaka.
