There was no movement around the top of the WTA rankings this week due to Fed Cup action taking place across the world, but that’s all set to change this week as some of the best players in the world gather in Stuttgart for the star-studded Premier-level Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

After disappointing early exits since winning the Australian Open at her next tournaments in Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami, Osaka will be hoping to swiftly find her feet on clay as she attempts to hold onto her No. 1 ranking over the coming months.

The good news for Osaka is that she isn’t defending any ranking points this week, which means she can only accumulate more, while her main rival for the top spot - No. 2 Simona Halep - is defending quarter-final points from Stuttgart 12 months ago.

However, World No. 3 Petra Kvitova also isn’t defending ranking points, meaning the Czech could gain enough points by reaching the final or winning the title to leapfrog Osaka if the Japanese loses in the opening round.

Halep can also reclaim the No. 1 ranking if Osaka loses early and she goes on to win the title. No. 4 Karolina Pliskova is the defending champion and therefore can’t accumulate any more ranking points this week.

Osaka has a bye in the first round before facing either Qiang Wang or Su-Wei Hsieh, while Halep faces the winner of Andrea Petkovic or a qualifier and Kvitova meets either Dominika Cibulkova or a qualifier.

No. 5 Angelique Kerber and No. 7 Kiki Bertens are also competing in Stuttgart, making it six of the world’s top 10 vying for the title.

There’s also a WTA International event taking place this week in Istanbul, headlined by No. 27 Carla Suarez Navarro and No. 30 Mihaela Buzarnescu.
