The first ever edition of the Baltic Open in Jurmala has crowned a homegrown champion as Latvian No. 1 Anastasija Sevastova held off a spirited fight from qualifier Katarzyna Kawa to emerge triumphant by a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 scoreline and take home her first piece of silverware for the season.

Kawa was one game away from completing the ultimately cinderella story as she led by a set and 5-4, but Sevastova refused to give in as she was spurred on by her home fans, with the Latvian holding firm to force a decider, where she then used her greater experience to finish off her Polish opponent.

"Before the finals I didn’t know how she plays, her shots, serve and how she moves. All my matches she could find on YouTube. I knew she will start well and will fight tough at the first set but she did the same in the third one as well,” Sevastova said.
"I showed character at this tournament, it was difficult, so it was two times more pleasant to win."

Sevastova, a U.S. Open semi-finalist last year, stays at her career-high ranking of No. 11, but is now just nine points shy of the top 10 as she looks to overtake the out-of-form Aryna Sabalenka.

Kawa, who had never appeared in a final above ITF $25k level before this week, enjoys a huge rankings boost this week, vaulting up 67 spots to a career-high mark of No. 127.

Meanwhile, Teichmann’s breakout season hit another high on Sunday as she upset World No. 5 Kiki Bertens to win her second title of the year in Palermo.

It was the first top 10 victory of Teichmann’s career as the Swiss conquered Bertens 7-6(3) 6-2 to add the Palermo silverware to the Prague title she won earlier in 2019.

The 22-year-old began the season well outside the top 100, but Teichmann is now at No. 54 after rising another 28 places courtesy of her Palermo triumph.

Two WTA events take place this week - Sloane Stephens leads the International-level even in Washington, while Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka are the top two seeds at the Premier-level tournament in San Jose.
