Former World No. 1 Kerber joins current World No. 1 Simona Halep as the only two women to have locked in their ticket to the WTA Finals Singapore - the elite season-ending competition where the year’s best eight players fight it out one last time in order to be crowned champion.

Kerber, who captured the Australian and U.S. Open titles during her career-best 2016 season before last year’s nightmare campaign, has enjoyed a resurgent 2018, kicking off the year by winning the Apia International title in Sydney and making the Australian Open semi-finals.

Also a Wimbledon quarter-finalist, Kerber is the only player to have reached at least the last eight at the first three slams of the season, while she also advanced to back-to-back quarter-finals at Premier Mandatory events in Indian Wells and Miami.

With a 42-15 match record for the season, Kerber is one of just four players to have eclipsed the 40 mark, joining Halep (46), Petra Kvitova (46)and Elise Mertens (43).

“I am honoured to qualify for the WTA Finals in Singapore this year,” said Kerber. “I have many memories of competing in Singapore, especially reaching the final in 2016, and I’m excited to be back and play in front of the amazing fans.”

Kerber has qualified for the WTA Finals on five occasions, including most recently in 2016 when she made the final before falling to Dominika Cibulkova. The German also qualified in Istanbul in 2012 and 2013 and Singapore in 2015.

Petra Kvitova and U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka are next in line to qualify on 4,250 and 4,047 points respectively, while Caroline Wozniacki (No. 5), Elina Svitolina, Sloane Stephens and Kiki Bertens round out the current top eight.

Contenders will have the chance to accumulate some big ranking points and boost their chances of Singapore qualification during the upcoming Asian swing, including big tournaments in Tokyo, Wuhan and Beijing.

The WTA confirmed earlier in 2018 that Chinese real estate company Gemdale Corporation had won the rights to host the WTA Finals in Shenzhen from 2019 through to 2028.
