Former world number one, Angelique Kerber continues her Eastbourne campaign on Wednesday when she takes on rising American, Danielle Collins in the Round of 16.

A finalist at Wimbledon in 2016, the naturally counter-punching Kerber has a surprisingly good record on grass. Apart from that Wimbledon final, she was runner-up in Eastbourne in 2012 and 2014, and was champion in Birmingham in 2015. Kerber combines her defensive excellence with a brilliant transition game to produce results on this surface, and all of that was evident in her performance against Dominika Cibulkova in her Eastbourne opener. The left-hander stifled the agressive Slovak, but still managed to hit a very impressive 26 winners, as against just 14 unforced errors in a fine 6-3 6-3 victory. Kerber had suffered opening round defeat to Alison Riske in her first match on grass for the season in Mallorca, but having warmed her way onto the surface in the Spanish city, the German opened her account with that very impressive win over Cibulkova in Eastbourne.

"I'm really happy to be back in Eastbourne," Kerber said after the match. "It's great to see the people here and all the fans who support me. Dominika is a tough opponent and it's never easy to play against her. I think I played good and I'm happy about my performance today".

"I'm looking forward to have even more matches here before getting to Wimbledon".

Kerber is looking to get into her 9th quarter final in 11 tournaments in what has been a wonderfully consistent campaign, a big contrast from her struggles in 2017, when she slipped out of the world's top 20. The 30-year-old briefly broke back into the top ten at the start of this year, after winning the Sydney title and reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open, but she has been on the fringes in the last few months, and currently lurks at 11th in the world- a really strong run in Eastbourne could push her back into the top ten.

The 24-year-old made a huge splash during the North American hard-court season, reaching the fourth round at Indian Wells, and then the semi-finals in Miami, where she claimed the big scalp of Venus Williams before falling to Jelena Ostapenko in the last four. She rounded off her time in America with a quarter-final in Monterrey, where she was beaten by Ana Bogdan.

Collins also enjoyed a decent spell in the WTA 125K Series in the US. The American was champion at Newport Beach at the start of the year, while she made the quarter finals at the Indian Wells Challenger.

She hasn't registered too many wins outside North America- she successfully navigate the qualifiers in big clay-court wins in Madrid and Rome, and managed to reach the second round in Rome, where she beat Sorana Cirstea before falling to Daria Kasatkina. She also reached the second round in Strasbourg, beating Amandine Hesse but losing to Qiang Wang.

Her grass-court stint opened with a first round loss to Rebecca Peterson in Mallorca, but she has picked up her first WTA wins on the surface in Eastbourne, beating Katie Swann and Carla Suarez Navarro to reach the round of 16. The world number 43 is no stranger to causing upsets, and she will seek another massive one when she steps onto the court with Kerber on Wednesday.

This is the first ever meeting between Kerber and Collins, and as well as the underdog has played this season, Kerber remains the firm favourite to get a comfortable win.
