Kiki Bertens faces a difficult start to her Qatar Open campaign as she takes on the dangerous Camila Giorgi on Tuesday.

No one really wants to play the explosive Giorgi this early in any tournament, as she is one of the genuine dangerous floaters in any draw, but Bertens has got that tough luck in Doha as she looks to stretch her current winning streak to five matches.

Bertens arrives Doha as a WTA titlist, having captured her first title of the season in St. Petersburg a couple of weeks ago. She has alternated between the good and the not-so-good this year, as she has suffered second round exits in Brisbane and the Australian Open, losing to Donna Vekic and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova respectively, but has also made a semi-final in Sydney and gone all the way in St. Petersburg. Coincidentally, she beat both Pavlyuchenkova and Vekic in her title-run in St. Petersburg.

The Dutchwoman, who was perceived as just a clay-court expert a couple of seasons ago, has again driven home her all-surface prowess with her performances this year. Bertens changed that clay-court perception last season, when she superbly won hard court titles in Cincinnati and Seoul; and reached the semi-finals at the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore. Of course, she still had her regular clay-court success, winning in Charleston, and finishing runner-up in Madrid, while she also had her moment on grass, making her first quarter final at Wimbledon following impressive wins Karolina Pliskova and Venus Williams. She is a title threat anywhere.

Bertens’ improvements propelled her into the top ten last year, and she looks in set for more success this season on the evidence of her start to be year. She's got a tricky one in Doha on Tuesday though, as she takes on Camila Giorgi.

World No. 28, Giorgi is only 3-2 for the season, after reaching the second round in Sydney (lost to Angelique Kerber), and the third round of the Australian Open (lost to Karolina Pliskova). She is coming off a disappointing week in the Fed Cup, as she lost both of her singles rubbers against Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic as Italy fell to Switzerland in their World Group II tie in Biel. Can she get things together in Doha?

Giorgi produced a career-best campaign in 2018, reaching a first Grand Slam quarter final at Wimbledon, where she pushed Serena Williams to three sets, and claiming her second WTA title in Linz at the end of the year, adding to her title in s-Hertogenbosch from 2015.

She finished the year at a career-high ranking of 26, despite being ranked at exactly 100th in the opening week of the year. That was because she crashed out in the opening round in Shenzhen, losing semi-final points from the previous season, but she hit back with a strong week in Sydney, rising through the qualifiers before powering past Sloane Stephens, Petra Kvitova and Agnieszka Radwanska to reach the semi-finals, where she was eventually stopped by Angelique Kerber.

She subsequently made semi-finals in Tokyo and Prague in her other marquee results from last season. The Italian wasn't without her injury problems last season, and one of the tournaments she missed was the Qatar Open in Doha. In fact, this will be her debut appearance in the main draw of the Qatar Open. Can she add to her nine top-ten wins when she plays Bertens on Tuesday?

Giorgi and Bertens have split their two previous meetings, with Giorgi winning 6-2 6-4 en route her maiden career title in s-Hertogenbosch, and Bertens responding with a similarly dominant 6-4 6-1 win at Roland Garros in the following year.

Bertens carries the form and the quality of a top-ten player, and has momentum from her St. Petersburg success. The Dutch powerhouse is rightfully the favourite for this one, but the aggressive flat-hitting Giorgi is no respecter of reputations, and is never too far away from carving out an upset.
