Top seed, Caroline Wozniacki seeks her first ever win over British No. 1. Johanna Konta as they battle for a quarter final spot at the Nature Valley International in Eastbourne on Wednesday.

Wozniacki and Konta came through convincing wins in supposedly difficult opening matches, with Wozniacki dismissing the dangerous Camila Giorgi in straight sets, while Konta did the same to Aleksandra Krunic, who had won the s-Hertogenbosch title a couple of weeks earlier.

Both ladies have fine records in Eastbourne, Wozniacki was champion back in 2009, and was runner-up to Karolina Pliskova last season. In between, she reached three consecutive semi-finals from 2012 to 2015. Konta is yet to claim the Eastbourne title, but she has made the semi-finals in each of the last two seasons, and is looking to reach the quarter finals for the fourth straight year.

Wozniacki had made that wonderful start to the season, bagging a runner-up finish in Auckland before claiming the Australian Open title, but her results in recent months have been ordinary, by her very high standards. The Dane has made just one semi-final (Doha) since winning the Australian Open, and has lost out in quarter finals in St. Petersburg, Istanbul and Rome. She failed to reach the last eight at Premier Mandatory tournaments at Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid, as well as Roland Garros, where she was beaten by Daria Kasatkina in the fourth round to round off an average clay-court campaign.

The world number two made a competent enough opening on grass, seeing off the often problematic Giorgi without much problems. The Italian initially threatened to cause more problems when she opened up a 2-0 lead at the start, but Wozniacki won the next six games to take the set before breaking three more times in the second set to complete a routine 6-2 6-3 win. The only blip in that second set was when she lost her serve while attempting to close out the match at 6-2 5-2, but she broke in the next game to seal a comfortable passage into the next round.

"I'm just happy to get myself tested on the grass this week, and this one was a great test for me, a great one leading up to Wimbledon," said Wozniacki, who is playing her first tournament on grass this season. "It's going to be fun and challenging. That's what I'm here for."

While Wozniacki is opening her grass court campaign in Eastbourne, Johanna Konta is already into her third tournament on the surface, having reached the final in Nottingham, and lost to Petra Kvitova in the opening round in Birmingham.

Konta is now ranked 22nd in the world, having spent most of last season in the top ten. The Briton hasn't had the best of seasons, making just the one WTA quarter final prior to the start of the grass court season. Within the same period last year, she had won titles in Sydney and Miami, and reached the quarter finals of the Australian Open. She had a fine campaign on grass last year, reaching the final in Nottingham, and semi-finals in Eastbourne and Wimbledon, but she tailed off badly after that, winning just two of her last eight matches. She lost opening round matches in Toronto, the US Open, Tokyo, Wuhan and Beijing, after which she ended her season due to a persistent foot injury.

A quarter final run in Brisbane at the start of 2018 ended a five-match losing streak, but she soon slipped into her dodgy form, failing to make any meaningful impact in the rest of the hard court season. Clay has never been her strong suit, and another ordinary spell on the dirt ended in a first-round loss to Yulia Putintseva at Roland Garros.

Konta always comes alive on grass, and that has again been the case this year as the Brit immediately reached the final in Nottingham for the second straight year, but she fell just short once again, losing to Ashleigh Barty. Konta was unfortunate to draw Petra Kvitova in the opening round in Birmingham, and she was duly beaten, but she returned to winning ways in Eastbourne, easing past Aleksandra Krunic 6-1 6-3.

It doesn't get any easier for the home favourite, as she runs into the tournament's top seed, Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday.

"It's a great opportunity for me to play one of the best players in the world", Konta said. "It's what I want to be doing, and the players I want to be playing against".

"She's a very tough competitor, and I just go out there and do what I look to in pretty much every match that I play - and that's looking to dictate, and move forward and be brave. I think I'm going to be playing on tomorrow's challenge and not necessarily how it went the previous two times that I played her."

Konta has won both previous meetings in straight sets, on the hard courts of the Australian Open and Miami from last season. Konta, when in form, has had the measure of Wozniacki, and after a difficult year, the Brit appears to be regaining some form on grass once again. As stated earlier, the home favourite is into her third tournament on the surface, and has already made a final, while Wozniacki will be playing just her second match on grass this season. There's plenty of reasons to back a Konta win on Wednesday!
