After surviving titanic tussles in their respective semi-finals, Julia Goerges and Belinda Bencic go head-to-head on Saturday, as they battle for the Luxembourg title.

Top seed, Goerges was two points away from defeat before fighting back to beat Eugenie Bouchard, while Bencic went deep into a third set before holding off Ukrainian teenager, Dayana Yastremska, whose eight-match winning streak came to a halt.

Goerges won the Moscow title in the corresponding week last year, before going on to claim the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai during a strong finish to the season, and with all those points on the line in the final weeks of 2018, the pressure was certainly on as she arrived Luxembourg. The world number nine has done pretty well, beating Viktoria Kuzmova, Anna Blinkova, Donna Vekic and Bouchard to get into the final. The German got through the first couple of rounds in straight sets, but she was pushed to three by Vekic in the quarter finals, and again by Bouchard in the semis, with the explosive Canadian leading by a set and a break, and then serving for the match in the second set, before falling away in the final set.

Despite fighting back from 2-5 down in the first set, Goerges lost the set on a tie break, and she was staring down the barrel of elimination as Bouchard served for the match at 5-4 in the second set. However, from 30-30, Goerges won 10 of the next 11 points to snatch the set and force a decider. Bouchard never really recovered from that setback as she quickly fell into a 5-0 hole in the final set before succumbing to a 6-7 7-5 6-1 defeat.

That escape takes Goerges into her third final of the season; the other two being in Auckland, which she won, and Charleston, where she was runner-up. A fine season has also included a maiden major semi-final at Wimbledon, as well as other semi-finals in St. Petersburg and New Haven.

Can she claim her second title of the season in Moscow on Saturday? Belinda Bencic is out to deny the German.

Bencic is into her first tour-level final since February 2016, when she lost to Roberta Vinci in St. Petersburg. It was after that tournament that the Swiss reached a career-high ranking of No. 7, but an extended battle with injuries meant she would rise no further, as she instead tumbled towards the opposite direction.

Bencic fell as low as 318th in September last year after missing almost six months with a left wrist injury which required surgery, but she did extremely well to climb back into the top 100 by the end of the year, following a brilliant re-entry into the sport. She won the ITF 100K tournament in St. Petersburg in her first tournament back after her lengthy absence, and she was in full flow by the end of the year, winning her last 15 matches, and picking up titles at WTA 125K tournaments in Hua Hin and Taipei, and the ITF 100K event in Dubai.

2018 has been a very slow burner for Bencic; she had a good period around mid-year, when she made the fourth round at Wimbledon and the quarter finals in Washington, but there was virtually nothing outside that- until Luxembourg.

The former top ten star entered Luxembourg without a win in her previous six matches, but she has found some of her old form this week, coming through three rounds of qualifying, and easing into the semi-finals with straight sets victories over Arantxa Rus, Kirsten Flipkens and Vera Lapko.

The world number 47 encountered much sterner examination in the last four against Dayana Yastremska, pulling off a tough 6-2 3-6 7-6 victory to get into the final. Not that Bencic, or anyone expected that semi-final to be easy, as Yastremska had been in the form of her life, bringing an eight-match winning streak into the contest, but Bencic snapped that run with a terrific win, which would further boost her confidence as she targets a return to her previous lofty position on the tour.

She takes on Goerges for the third time on Saturday, having split the previous two encounters with the German. Both matches were played in 2015, with Goerges winning in straight sets at the Australian Open, and Bencic responding with a three-set victory in Stuttgart.

Will it be Goerges to claim her second title of the season, or can Bencic go away with her first WTA title since the Rogers Cup in 2015?

Julia Goerges vs Belinda Bencic is live from Luxembourg on Saturday, 20 October from 3:00pm local time/ 2:00pm BST
