Defending champion, Julia Goerges begins her WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai campaign on Wednesday when she takes on Estonia's Anett Kontaveit.

Following her defeat to Elise Mertens in her opening match on Tuesday, Kontaveit must win to keep her semi-final chances alive, but she runs into an in-form Goerges, who is looking to emulate last year's finish when she ended the season on a nine-match winning streak after winning Moscow and Zhuhai.

The German opted to play Luxembourg instead of Moscow this year, but it yielded the same result, as she defeated Belinda Bencic in the final to claim her second title of the season, and the sixth of her career. The 29-year-old had picked up her first title of the year in her season-opener in Auckland, where she defeated Caroline Wozniacki to claim the crown. She also contested another final in Charleston in April, but fell short against Kiki Bertens.

A consistent campaign also produced a first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon, while she also made semis in St. Petersburg and New Haven, and quarter finals in Doha, Birmingham and Moscow.

Goerges first broke into the top 10 in early February, and she hovered in and around the mark for most of the year, but she is currently playing at No. 14 as the points she got from winning Zhuhai last season have dropped off. That has created a bit of pressure this week, as she goes in search of all those points in her bid to secure a first-ever top-ten finish.

Goerges first burst onto the scene at the turn of the decade, breaking into the top 20 for the first time 2011, but her career stalled after that, and it wasn't until last year, particularly the second half, that she started motoring again. Goerges won titles in Washington, Moscow and Zhuhai, and made finals in Mallorca and Bucharest to climb to a year-end ranking of 14th. She has backed it up nicely this year, and will be looking to provide the perfect ending in Zhuhai.

First up for the German is Estonia's Anett Kontaveit, who is competing at the WTA Elite Trophy for the first time in her career.

Kontaveit didn't make the best of starts, as she was well beaten by Elise Mertens, 6-3 6-1 in the opening match of the Rose Group on Tuesday.

Neither Mertens nor Kontaveit served particularly well, with the former serving at just 47%, and Kontaveit only slightly better at 51%, but Mertens protected her second serve a lot better, winning 59% of points behind her second offering, while Kontaveit was reduced to just 25%, or 5 from 20. That was always unlikely to cut it, and so it proved as she got broken six times to concede defeat in an hour and seven minutes.

Currently ranked at a career-high mark of 20th, Kontaveit had her most consistent period of the year on clay, when she reached semi-finals in Stuttgart and Rome, before capping a fine spell on the dirt with a fourth-round run at Roland Garros.

Away from clay, she made her only final of the season in Wuhan, losing to Aryna Sabalenka, while she reached the fourth round at the Australian Open, and the third round at Wimbledon. Kontaveit hasn't been without her lean spells this year, but she had produced enough good results to ensure that her ranking keeps ticking in the right direction.

The Estonian lost to Goerges in three sets in their only previous meeting in Budapest last season- she will need to turn that result around if she is to retain any interests in Zhuhai.

Both ladies like to play on the front foot, and can blitz winners from virtually any position on the court, but Goerges has got that little bit more control off the serve, and off the ground, which is why I think the champion will be too strong for Kontaveit on Wednesday.
